Swim
Comments: I knew my swim was going to suffer based on the new training plan that I have started this year. They push the swim training out to later in the year. Which is great for me--but I paid the price for this tactical race. Last year I did the swim in 7:49--which is the different between this year and last years overall time. Transition 1
Comments: Great transition. I felt strong and didn't make any problems for myself Bike
Comments: My bike was strong. Last year I was spent after the bike and paid the price on the run. My goal this year was to go very hard--but spin toward the end to get the legs back into the race. However, I did get some leg cramps during the race. I saw Ron (Guncollector) out on the course. It was great to talk to him during the bike--he nailed the flats! What would you do differently?: Not ride a century the weekend before! Also, my garmin died, so I don't have much of the information that I needed for good analysis. Transition 2
Comments: Much better than last year. I talked to a couple of people who were by my rack while I was getting ready to go. Run
Comments: I caught Ron at the end of transition, but he opened it up on me--beating me a good 100 meters on the track. I felt pretty good on the run. I did not push it too much at the beginning--which was my strategy. I headed up the first hill and I was picking people off. Not that I'm fast. My legs were pretty tight from my VDOT 5K test on Thursday. They loosed up on the down hill portion of the first hill before the second climb. The second hill went much better. I opened it up more on the way back down the hill and kept up a great pace as I headed to campo and around the track. I saw Ron ahead of me and it was a great modivator. However I was a minute faster than last year. What would you do differently?: Not do a threshold test the week of a test! Post race
Warm down: I congratulated Ron and his Family. I got back and saw Hans--who thought he had raced a good race. Well, I found out later that he did. He won the fricken thing! What limited your ability to perform faster: Too much work the week before this race. But this was a tactical race and I'm happy! Event comments: I love this race. I feel that this is a well run race--as good as many of the much larger races. I feel like this is my home course! I saw the race director afterwards--and he had a good day too. I woke up late and ran up to Moraga to get ready. I did not set my clock correctly. So I paid the price. :-)
I ran for about 3 minutes and then did four sets of 20 second strides. I really should have gotten on the bike and did some swim too.
