Pre-race routine:

Woke up at about 5:20 but didn't get out of bed til 5:45, coffee, cereal, Diet Pepsi, checked emails, fed cats, showered...am I the only person who showers on race day? ;) Loaded up back pack and jumped on bike at about 7 am and peddled over to Neenah about 2.5 miles.
Event warmup:

Was a bit chilly (maybe 50) and I fretted over what to wear but wore sweats which i took off before transition closed, long sleeves, vest, my son's flaming gloves (flamin' as in speedy!) and my tri shorts.Hit the portopotties 2 times. Chatted a bit. Warmed up on the bike on the way over I guess...quads were a bit stiff.
Run
  • 17m 48s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

Started at the back of the pack. Felt pretty good. Ankles were stiff but I was cold at first. Happy with my time--better than any training times. And I passed a few peeps! YAY!
What would you do differently?:

Push a bit harder I guess.
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

I could not get my shoes on fast enough but T1 after a run was waaaaaay easier than t1 during a tri ;)
What would you do differently?:

Run faster in T1

Comments:

At mile 5 my quads were already barkin'! I had thoughts of 'maybe I can just stop and call my dh to come get me'. But then buckled down and said 'face the music and push through this'. I can not get over how fatigued my quads get in races. I really need to push harder during training - distance and resistance. Any help?! Please advise. I had bursts of strength but I was hurtin' by the end. A few times passing really sucked because peeps would ride 2,3 side by side or one person would ride in the middle and sort of drift...spent some energy just passing way out on the outside.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder. Push harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Just before I got to T2 I saw my dh and son waving! YAY! Made me so happy to see them. I was wobbly getting my bike shoes off/run shoes on. Comical. And I could not get my clasp undone on my helmet.
What would you do differently?:

Actually 'run' into transition...I took about 3 running strides then sort of loped along. Great to see the family cheering me on as I left t2 too! I told them "my legs are barkin'!"
Run
  • 17m 55s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

I was feeling a bit tired and winded but really ok just kept myself from red-lining with calming thoughts.
What would you do differently?:

Relax... push... have more leg power left after the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some h20 and Gatorade. Banana. Said goodbye to family and that I'd meet them at home. Packed up and left on my bike...drove over glass on bridge near home - frigitall! I don't think it punctured the tire though. Showered then hit the diner for brunch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Legs petering out on me. I need more strength/stamina in my quads. Faster cadences too.

Event comments:

At one crossing there were irate motorists..beeping, some yelling obscenities to volunteer and muttering about 'don't bikes have breaks? can't cars pass through? and how he had called the authorities..... traffic was backing up....then a pace car (or some official race car) was beeping and driving on the grass by all the stopped cars..freaked me out so I hit the brakes not knowing if he'd stop. That was the only problem that I saw. Otherwise race was superb out on the bike course with volunteers/support. Day's weather was awesome! Guy who sang the National Anthem did a great job of hitting high notes and I give him lots of credit. Lots of newbies...some clueless about bike 'etiquette' on the road but no real problems..we've all been there. Terrific venue! I'll do this race again next year. And I WILL be faster and stronger on that bike ;)

I saved some juice to push a little at the very end. I was pleased overall. (still had my speedy gloves on and now my hands were hot)

Excellent job Sarah!  I do think you might be the only person to shower before a race though.   Sounds like a good course. Hope to be there next year.

Great job!!!  If i do not shower in the AM i never wake up, you are notalone in that dept!!!  Great consistency on the run!!  Why do people get so annoyed with races, what is it like 10 mins from your life??? in the AM as it is??  I dunno??

Congrats on the great race!!!

Great Race! I know what you mean about the irate motorists; near the bike-in area, I had to slam on my brakes for a guy that just decided not to stop. Almost became a hood ornament, but managed to stay upright and get to T2 in one piece. I was a beautiful day for the race though. Have a great season.
