I did my first 1/2 marathon yesterday and noticed I have some blue-purple discoloration under 1 big toenail and it's sore to the touch. There were lots up uphills, so there were lots of downhills...I'm guessing it's  from the pressure on the downhills.

Happen to anyone else?  Please tell me your nail did not fall off!

I do get bruised toenails, but very infrequently.  And I have not lost a nail yet.

Congrats on your 13.1.

I'm still waiting for both of my big toenails that fell off after a race last fall to grow back. No open toed shoes for me this summer!

I've lost toenails several times.  They grow back.  Ironically, I used to lose one every year after an annual backpacking trip with a group of buddies.  Every year it would grow back just in time for the next trip!

It's a little gross, but not painful when they come off.  You may want to avoid brightly colored pedicures which would draw attention to the missing nail if it comes off.  It is possible that there is a bruise under the nail and the nail bed itself is OK.  In which case, you may want the doctor to drill a hole in the nail to let the blood out.

three middle toes on the right foot havent all had regular toenails on em for a while.  fun to gross out the daughters and i let em paint em for me too if they want from time to time.  black toenail issue solved!  and yes, it falls off as the next one grows in.

My hubby actually is dealing with this issue.  Be warned!  It can be more than just normal wear and tear from run.  First issue, your shoes may not fit properly.  You don't want the foot sliding so much that your toe smashes into the end of your shoe every time you take a step.  Secondly, when my hubby went to the podiatrist for this issue, turned out that he actually had a toenail fungus going on.  The doc put him on Lamisil and clear toenail is already starting to come in at the base.  I'd recommend going to a podiatrist for toenail issues - just to make sure it's not a more serious issue.

X2 on the toenail fungus issue.  I have had it twice and it isn't the easiest thing in the world to get rid of.  The standard treatment is 90 days on Lamisil and you have to go to a lab for a LFT (liver function test) after 3-4 weeks to make sure it isn't affecting your liver.  The 90 day treatment didn't work for me and I had to go back a year later for 120 days of treatment.  Kind of a PITA.

Yeah it happens commonly, but I don't think it should be considered "normal," could be your shoes aren't quite a good fit for longer distance (as your feet swell some on longer runs).  I have lost a big toenail before; it doesn't really hurt and grows back fine.  Congrats on the finish!

I bruise my nails while running hills but do it while going up; not down.  I dig my toes into the hills and the result is tender toes and blackened nails.  I haven’t lost a nail yet.  Just have the patience to let it grow out.  If there is a lot of pressure and the “black” portion is near the tip, try piercing it with a sanitized stick pin to pop the blood blister.  I just got one yesterday, too, running the half in Lincoln.  I might try going up a half shoe size to see if that helps prevent them.

I also managed to get some black toes over the past couple of months during running events.

Question is:  Is there some preventative measure once you start feeling the "pressure" under the toenail?  I heard that you can actually take a drill bit (small of course), sterilize it, and gently use it to alleviate the pressure under the nail by making a small hole to bleed it out......

Fact or fiction?

to add fuel to the fire (so to speak) i just recently found that one of my toenails is discolored...  is there any way to tell if this is a bruise or fungus?  i used to run in high school (a lot more than i do now) and never had this problem, but maybe its my mistake by stubbing my toe somewhere (really i dont know, i do this quite often and dont remember any in particular but i cant rule it out).

anyway, i just finished reading 'once a runner' (and loved it), but they talk about ugly feet and maybe i am just starting to understand that....

Now, how can you be sure of that?  Do you only have uphills where you run? Or do you roll down the hills like when we were little kids?

I have one on the left foot that is not long for the world and one on the right foot that is bruised but doesn't look in danger of falling off.  My issues come from the hills as well, I dig in.

My running store recommended the toe sleeves, like these: http://www.footsmart.com/P-Gel-Toe-Cap-Set-of-2-98122.aspx But now that I am done with my half-mary (I did the pig too, congrats!), I am going to have my shoes evaluated.

The big risks at the moment for your toe is if the bruise causes too much pressure under the nail or if it gets infected.  You will know if it gets inficted it will hurt lots and swell up.  The cure for both of those is to get it drained either by yourself or a doctor, depending on how easy it is to get a steril pin into the affected area.  The whole fungus thing sounds more complicated.

It will fall off but usually takes awhile.

But this CAN be prevented with proper care.  I haven't lost a toenail in YEARS.

1. Buy shoes that truly fit.  If this is happening often it means you need a different shoe or one a half size up.
2. Pedicures are my new prerace ritual.  I swear it lessens the friction.
3. Keep the toenails short.  Always trim right before a race (hence the usefulness of the pre-race pedi).
4. Aquaphor or vaseline known "issue" toenails.

Good luck.

If you saw the pace at which I run, you'd know that I only have uphills in my 'hood.
