Subject: First tri...do one or watch one??

I was thinking about having my first tri be on May 30th.  However, i am completely new to this sport and never even seen one.  With that being said, it is really a good idea to have this tri be my first or would i be better off watching one first?  I have no idea what to even wear, or how you get from the swim to the bike to the run.
Could some of you please let us newbie’s know what the heck is going on… what to do, what to wear, and all that good stuff.  Or if there are any good readings or clips on this that would help as well.
Like i said, i am COMPLETELY new and have no idea what to except and would like all the help and information i can get!

There's talk about a BT MI Tri at Kensington on May 17.  It might be good to get out and watch/help.  Just a suggestion.

I don't think you're alone in never having done a tri before, I know I haven't,  but I've gotten a lot of info from this group.  First, in case you haven't seen it, we ( the BT group)  are holding an informal tri on the 17th (not sure if its going to be at Kensington or Island Lake) so if you can make it, it'll give you some good practice plus you'll be able to ask questions first hand from people that have a lot of experience.  There's a thread in the forum called Lets Make a Triathlon.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=144321&posts=112&start=1

As for what to wear, most will probably be in wet suits as the temps will probably be pretty low, but if you don't have one you probably won't be the only one.  I wear a pair of triathlon shorts under the wet suit - it'll dry pretty quick once you get on the bike.  The bikes will be staged near the end of the swim, so you jump out of the water, start stripping off your wet suit, throw on a shirt, your shoes, helmet, etc, and hop on.  When you finish the bike, you head back to the transition area where you hop off, put on your run gear and take off.  For me, that'll just be putting on my running shoes.

Hope to see you out there.

Come to our informal "make our own triathlon" on 5/17.  That'll be a great place to meet a lot of other BTers and to tri it for free.  Not sure which event you're interested in, the Hawk Island one on 5/31 is great for beginners.  51 spots left (out of 600) last time I checked.

What coop and everyone else said!

However, if memory serves me right, you're a female?  If so, I wear tri short, a tri jersey and a bra underneath.  I do all of that because I tend toward being breasticully gifted.  Laughing  I know that some just wear a bathing suit for the whole race, mostly one-piece.  Whatever you choose to use, make sure to try it out in training...for each discipline!

That was my main concern.......the boob issue.  I am large and cannot imagine running with just my swim suit on.  It has A LITTLE support, but not much.  My triathlon is not until August, and was not sure what to do about that.  But I was not planning on wearing a wet suit?!?!  Maybe that is a good idea so I can wear the bra underneath?!?!  Thanks for the thought!!

Resident boob expert here.  I think that I maintain the largest boobed triathlete title, at least in Michigan.  Wear a good sports bra.  I wear the super bullet proof one that I run in for the whole tri.  I wear sports bra, tri top, tri shorts and then wetsuit for the swim.  No question, wear whatever you have to to support the girls.  It won't slow you down and your eyes won't get black on the run from all the bouncing.  All is good!

Should we have a boob-off?

Bring it!  Yours would win for style but mine would win for size.
