Hey Everyone.  I just got an e-mail from the Liberty Tri folks saying that they will leave registration open for another day or two, if you still wanted to sign up. They already have over 500 registrants but will accept a few more.  It's a great race - if you're still deciding if you want to try it (Oly or HIM) I would highly recommend this venue.

hmmm... interesting. I've been flirting with the idea of doing the HIM. But, only started HIM training in mid march (for Chisago in July).

Anyone want to take a gander at my logs and tell me if I'm crazy?

Edited to add: I've never done a HIM, hence the wondering if I'm ready....

Oh yea you could do it. Swim is really no more than Oly distance, you just did a 4+ hour bike and you are groovin on the 8.5 mile runs.  I'd say go for it.

Well, I'm no expert but if I was doing the same amount of activity you are I would certainly think I could finish it.  You could do it as a warm-up for Chisago and see what you need to work on.

You're asking crazy people if you're crazy? How crazy is that?

I too have flirted with doing Liberty. I plan to push the Buffalo Oly the week prior so don't feel like stumbling home on the so I'll pass.

Your sbr volume would easily let you finish the Liberty HIM. Why not just go do it for fun?

Do it. Its a great venue. Probably one of my favorite races in MN. It's were I did my first HIM back in 2006. Not probably considered a destination race, but the campground there is superb. Would do it this year, but I'm doing Trinona instead.

Well, if the temp is going to be 78 I don't mind the rain as much.  Although smooth glassy lake water would be preferred, which is hard to come by when it's raining.

I remember swimming in Lake Independence the day before last year's race.  Wind and whitecaps.  Drank several cups of lake water.

It calmed down overnight, and by the day of the race, the lake was fairly smooth.  Had me nervous for a while...

Gross!  By the way, I didn't notice the smell of Nokomis while swimming, but holy smokes did I personally find myself ripe with lake smells afterwards.  That was really gross - I considered burning my clothes, ha ha.  It didn't taste very good either

So how tough is this course? I've read some older race reports and both the bike and run sound hilly. How does it compare to Buffalo for example?

I think the bike is easier than Buffalo, although I've done the Liberty course a bunch of times and Buffalo only once (and just the sprint).  So Liberty is home turf for me.  There are two good-sized hills at Liberty and a lot of rollers, but also good opportunity for long speedy sections.  And Liberty is a beautiful course to look at.

The run at Liberty can be tough.  There's a nasty woodchip hill to run up at the start and it can be pretty hot and sunny on the route.    I don't know the Buffalo Oly run, but the sprint run was a cinch compared to Liberty.

Edit:  You signed up for the half, right?  Your course takes the hardest hill (Homestead on the map) two times.  That sucks.  The return route on 24 back to the park is also fairly hilly.

After the woodchip hill, the run course is essentially an out and back on rolling paved trails through the county park.  Besides the folks at the aid stations, there were little if ANY spectators.  I 'bonked' on the run last year at mile 4 and found it very easy to find an excuse to walk when no one was spectating.  Yes, that's my fault--I was mentally weak.

Just sayin, I thought it was a mentally tough run.  If you've got discipline (unlike me), it'll be no problem...

I drove the olympic course today. It seems like a pretty fast course. Do they shut down one lane of traffic?

No.  But the only tricky part is on Hwy 6 with traffic, and there is a good shoulder there.  They do an excellent job at intersections.  I honestly have never noticed an issue/problem with cars on that route, and I ride it fairly often and at different times.

Hey, I finally found the official thread!  I'll be heading up from Iowa to participate in the half this weekend.  Thanks for all the info on the course so far.  It's great to know a little bit about what I'm getting into.

If you see a guy wearing bright orange shorts and a green shirt before or after the race don't be afraid to say hi.  Good luck to everyone and I really really really hope the weather forecast stays as is right now

Forecast still looks good! 78 for a high, partly cloudy with winds from the ssw at 6mph. Doesn't get much better then that.

Looking forward to this one as well... my second 1/2 and the first was Silverman which puts "hilly" at an understatement.  My fitness levels are a bit better now, but not significantly, so looking forward to seeing what if any time difference between the two.  Should be alot of fun and good luck to everyone... have a safe race!

I am doing the half and went swimming in Lake Independence last night to try out my wetsuit. Water temp was not bad. I spent 30 minutes in the water and my hands and feet were ok. Water was a little green though.
