White Lake, North Carolina
United States
Set-up Inc.
78F / 26C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 30m 24s
Overall Rank = 152/324
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 36/58
Pre-race routine:

After several days of no sleep in prep for finals, then close proximity to Love2Tri before her 1/2 , tried to get a good night sleep. Got a few hours, more than previous nights which was nice.

Got up about 5am, ate a mini cinnamon bagel, a banana, a bottle of water, and nursed some coffee. Loaded the van and left for race site about 5:40, got there about 6. Since my race number was the same as Alice’s from the day before, new right where my rack was located in transition.

Setup transition, talked with Alice and Stephanie and then went down to pick up my chip and get marked up.

Event warmup:

Got in the water a little early and swam a bit to get familiar with wetsuit and lake swimming.
Swim
  • 16m 29s
  • 750 yards
  • 02m 12s / 100 yards
Comments:

Decent swim for having a wetsuit, would have liked it to have been faster but I am a crappy swimmer.
What would you do differently?:

Kicked more, tended to do an all arms swim. Drafted more, never found anyone to get in a groove with... generally been more comfortable in the water. Need to get the Lake Norman open water swim schedule out... some two lap open water swims would be good...
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Official times for Transitions lost due to timing device failure, no competitors had info...

~2mins
What would you do differently?:

Overall good
Bike
  • 48m 2s
  • 14 miles
  • 17.49 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Clearly a "comfortable" pace says I left some bike-ability out on the course...
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

No official time, ~1min
Run
  • 25m 54s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run, but got a side stitch early that probably kept me from goal time of an even 1:30
What would you do differently?:

Go faster, need to practice my bike/run switch - see more bricks in the future.
Post race
Warm down:

Talking with Alice, cheering in a few others, and then a wade/swim in the lake

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim-ability, bike-ability, run-ability === generally me

Event comments:

Would do it all again this weekend if I could... would love to do the 1/2 some day in the future...

Can't believe you could focus on race day mental prep while also studying for finals. Or vice-versa. Kudos to you for doing so much in so little time!!

Sometimes the swim is longer than it's supposed to be. How does your swim time compare to your age group rank. I think 16 min is a good time for White lake!

Oh, and how did you end up with the exact same number???? Too funny!
