Overcast
Total Time = 1h 30m 23s
Overall Rank = 107/154
Age Group = M 50-54
Age Group Rank = 9/12
Pre-race routine:

Nothing special. A little breakfast a couple of hours before the start.

This race is for an excellent cause. From the web site:

The 6th Annual NYS Trooper Biathlon is the major annual fundraiser for the Kelly Children's Education Fund and the Ken Poormon Memorial Fund. Proceeds from this year's event will also benfit the John J. McKenna Fund. Mike Kelly and Ken Poormon were killed in the line of duty in Ulster County, NY on May 31, 2000. Trooper and USMC Captain John McKenna was killed in combat in Iraq on August 16, 2006

Event warmup:

About 3/4 of a mile easy run. Somehow during the warmup, my HR went way high and I started to feel a little woozy. Maybe because my wife and I went out to celebrate our 22nd anniversary the night before and I had a couple of drinks, but who knows. Never felt quite right running after that, which may have been mostly mental.
Run
  • 17m 58s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Slower than I should have been. Felt a little "off" during the run.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster? Suck it up, buttercup?
Transition 1
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

What the heck was I doing for 1:26?
What would you do differently?:

Move faster!
Bike
  • 50m 34s
  • 14 miles
  • 16.61 mile/hr
Comments:

Happy with the bike. Stayed aero for a lot of the fast downhills instead of chickening out and riding the bullhorns so I could be close to the brakes like I usually do. At mile 10 there is a big hill with about 500 ft. climbing in a mile or so. I climbed reasonably well and passed 10 or 20 people, including some who had gotten off to walk.
What would you do differently?:

Push the first 10 miles a little more. I may have held back a little in anticipation of the climb.
Transition 2
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

Still way too slow. I wore tights because I like my old knees to be nice and warm on the bike. I took them off for the second run, but c'mon, speed it up a little!
What would you do differently?:

Move faster
Run

  • 2 miles
  • 09m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Even slower than the first run. Definitely mostly mental because my legs felt fine coming off of the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. The best thing about events involving the police is they always have hamburgers and hot dogs after, so I ate a few of those.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm slow, and I don't train enough. Also, I was not mentally tough on this day. Still, I am happy with my race and I had a lot of fun.

Event comments:

A really fun, small local race for a very worthy cause. I intend to do this one annually.
