Total Time = 1h 11m 43s
Overall Rank = 318/765
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 27/81
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:00 am. Ate a homemade breakfast burrito and a banana. Also, had a small class of chocolate milk.

Left the hotel at 5:30 and arrived at the venue at 5:45 am. Checked the air in the bike tires.

Got body marked and then claimed a spot in transition and began to set up my transition area. Once the transition area was organized I made sure I knew where the start for each event was.

Event warmup:

Light stretching.

Short warm-up swim...this helped get a fill for the OWS since I had never done one before.
Swim
  • 07m 41s
  • 328 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

OWS is a lot different than the pool.

I was not able to breath every 3 strokes because I was afraid of running in t swimmers in front of me. Just after rounding the buoy, I got caught behind a two other swimmers and had a hard time getting around them...this cost me some time in the swim...this is also the point when I became a little anxious.
What would you do differently?:

Do more OWS in trainning so it is not foreign to me.

Relax more!
Transition 1
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

I felt like I had a good T1. I did not sit down to put on socks and shoes...this is something that I had to work on.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep practicing and doing it in race situations...it will get better the more I do it.
Bike
  • 40m 51s
  • 11.1 miles
  • 16.30 mile/hr
Comments:

I did better on the bike than I thought I would. The hills were a little intimidating, but I negotiated them fine. I was pleased with my pace and was able to maintain it throughout the entire ride. Also, I had a PR for this distance on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Need to drink more. I am bad about staying hydrated.
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

I was able to find my transition area easily. It helped that another competitor had marked the rack with a bright yellow and green piece of cloth.
What would you do differently?:

I like the idea of marking the rack with something...I will definitely put a marker in the back next race.
Run
  • 18m 29s
  • 2 miles
  • 09m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

The hills were a little difficult for me...I have never run hills before. I was consistent with my pace and I did not walk. I had a strong finish and was able to kick at the end of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Include hills in the training. Train long distances.

Not be so conservative on the pace and push a little more next time. I was unsure of how much energy I would have so I was a little cautious.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank water and ate some fruit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Anxiety and not knowing how exactly the body would perform.

Event comments:

This was a grest venue for a race. It was well organized and the volunteers and spectators were wonderful. Great first experience for a triathlon.

CONGRATULATIONS, TRIATHLETE!!!

Great job out there tackling those hills, Nik. You'll find that with practice you'll get more comfortable in open water.

Congrats!  And great job getting that first OWS under your belt.  Doesn't it feel weird to put your head down in the water and not be able to see 6in in front of you.  Takes some getting used to.  But practice makes perfect...keep up the good work!

Thanks a ton!

I was very excited to get my very first tri completed.  The OWS is a different beast, but I plan on finding some places to practice and incorporating it into my training.

Nice race for you!
