Subject: Nutrition for HIM run?

I'm getting ready to buy some new shorts for my HIM in October, but I can't decide if I want ones with pockets for gel packs, or no pockets and then just fuel up at the stations... what do you think?  What do you all do for nutrition during the run?

Purely personal choice.  I usually rely on course-supplied nutrition but will sometimes carry a gel or 2 of my own.  Since my tri top has side pockets, I just put them in there.  Haven't ever used (or felt the need to have) shorts with pockets.

I wore tri shorts for the whole race (no pockets). I kept a couple of gels in my pockets on my tri top as well (in my bento box for the bike). Usually, they will have lots of nutrition options during the race and typically you can find this out online beforehand.

I love my Zoot tri shorts that have a pocket on each leg. You really can't tell they are even there. But most races I use my tri suit that has side pockets. The zoot's I have used in marathons and a few sprints.

Pockets. Just can't go wrong with that added feature!

I wear my tri shorts for all my long runs... and I need to carry gels on those. Although, my tri top has two pockets and I can fit 2 gels in each pocket, so it works out nicely. I can also put two in the bra area if it's really long run! HA!

I'd get the ones w/ pockets - I mean, why not? If you don't use them, no harm done.

I put 1 or 2 gels in my shorts pocket coming out of T2. Never know what will be at the aid stations, I personally never rely on them and carry all my own nutrition.

X2 on the Zoot shorts.  Also have their matching top with the same style pockets.  For HIMs I carry a gel in each (four gels) the whole day so they're already there for the run and I don't have to think about it in T2.

Hhhuuuummmm... 3 or 4 gels don't weigh that much. It's not like he'd be carrying the kitchen sink.

I like stuff in my pockets in my shorts and it doesn't bounce at all. Some tri tops aren't snug enough and I find a bounce factor that is annoying.

Oomph! makes great tri shorts that have 3 pockets, built in race belt holder for front or back with velcro and also loops for gels. They come with a distance pad that is a bit more than most tri shorts but not bothersome. They have different style shorts for longer races. The Kalieau are the one with all the pockets. They are expensive but what I wear for IM and HIMs. I buy some similar ones with the same pad and use them for training but they only have one pocket.

I also found an Oomph top called Ali that has three back pockets like a bike jersey that is snug so no bounce factor. I just bought a second one and use them for all my long runs.

given the choice i'd definitely opt for the pockets.  at my HIM sunday i had on the zoot trisuit, which has 2 small pockets on the sides, and i really really wished i would have had more pockets to put stuff in.  like it was mentioned above, more pockets couldn't hurt

I tend to rely on the course, but my run belt has little elastic things to hold gels.  I've occasionally used that on long training runs, and it works fine.

I go with the race number belt by fuel belt that has the elastic things for gels.  I personally don't rely on nutrition from the course cause 1) what if they run out when you get there and you have no fuel and 2) they only have a flavor that you can't stand and it makes you sick (like a choc gel on NY marathon course did to me).  Be prepared!

x2... what if you've been practicing with GU and they only offer Hammer Gel and your tummy rejects it? MANY people can tolerate only one brand of Gel, or a certain brand gives them GI issues.  I just think in case you absolutely know 100% what will be offered on the course (and in some cases you will) and know your body will accept it, you need to carry your own nutrition.

I have not had any luck with pockets of any  kind.  Gu's and such just fall out on the run.  I don't know how they get out, but they do and it is a real dissapointment when you reach for that GU at a certain point and nothing.  That being said, some races are fully stocked and some have nothing.  I did a marathon that had like 10 aid stations and ya all they had was water.  Since I have had gu's fall out of short pockets, shirt pockets etc., I just hooked up a small pouch to my race belt and tossed the GU's in there, worked like a charm.  The pouch has a zipper to ensure stuff stays put.
