Subject: Meridian crit races?
Does anyone know about these races?  They seem to be on Tuesday and Thursday nights in the Meridian business park at Lincoln and I/25.  Is it a race or just informal race training?  Any fees or memberships required?  Any idea where they meet and what the format is, etc.?

Thanks!

They start at 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays just north of Hacienda Colorado.  You can't miss the 50-75 riders that participate in the informal training sessions.  At roughly 6pm the group starts heading north for a clockwise loop around the roughly 2 mile course.  I've been to a handful and with the many CAT 1-3 riders out there, it took all I had to hang on for a lap or two - once they start pushing it.  If you do get dropped, most people will wait at the top of the hill on the southern end of the loop (where you turn in from Lincoln) to jump back in.   I will say it is a great workout, but don't go there with trashed legs..........

Cool.  That's kind of what I'm looking for, i.e., faster riding.  So is it basically just a workout or are they racing?  Is there a set distance?

They are just training...I work right by there and see them all the time...they definitely move quick up some pretty steep hills...

When I ride with that group, I'm racing and they are just training - or at least thats what it feels like.  I've only ridden for about an hour at a time, so I don't know how long the group rides for.  It's a 2 mile loop, so you can drop out whenever you want.

I'm assuming I probably have to remove my clip on aerobars if I ride with them?

Yes, that would be a good idea.  I heard a horror story once about a group on TT/Tri bikes that caused all kinds of carnage.

I tried to sit in with these guys once and got it handed to me.  Be ready for fast in close quarters.

From the roadies point of view that became a tri geek.:

If you like Crit racing, understand the dynamics of a peleton, can hold a line, and want a super fun LT workout with lots of adrenaline... it's a blast.

Do NOT ride with Aero's.  One of 2 things will happen: A) We'll ask you to take them off. B) if some of the ego types are there, they will box you out, and leave you scraping for position in the gutter until you pop out the back.  Either way, no Bueno!

Years ago, it was designed as an actual race.  Then again, that was long before buildings and traffic lights.

It a great way to train peleton tactic and LT threshold burns.  The pro's all the way doen to Cat5 JFF riders all go off at the same time.  It is a 1 hour ride.  Usually there will be  a call with about 3 laps to go.  The last lap is brutal, if you have not done a bunch sprint, sit back and enjoy the chaos of the bunch sprint.  Too dangerous for my blood.  If you get popped, it's best to get in at the top hill near the parking area.  At least here, it's moving at about 35mph, and most people are recovering after the hill up through the light.

There have been some big names that pop in from time to time.  I can remember doing one with Mike Creed back when he was on Discovery.  Crazy dude wasn;t wearing a helmet.  Tommy D, Mari Holden, Tyler, and a bunch of the local Elites have popped in from time to time.

I have seen some really nasty crashes that have involved broken bones and bikes there as well.

Be careful and have fun.  Know when to say when.  Be sure to watch your line, and if you are taking one, use the peleton courtesy rule.

Enjoy it.  Maybe I'll c ya out there when my base is set.
