Pre-race routine:

This was my first night race so my routine was to go to school in the day, swim after school, and then head to the race. Nothing too special. I had a protein shake after my swim, but I didn't eat anything.
Event warmup:

Ten minute jog.

Comments:

Wow what an awesome race for me! I raced smart and fast and had a peronsal best by 38 seconds! This was the biggest 5k I have raced at and in the beginning a lot of people raced out in front of me. I held a steady pace and just let everyone pass me while I raced my own race.

This was the first 5k I really felt in control of my mental state. I focused solely on my race and made sure I wasn't fading. I was not passed after the first mile and probably passed 150+ people in the subsequent two miles. My first and second mile were about even at 6:18 and 6:22.

The third mile has been tough for me in past 5k's. I have faded really bad in the past and even thrown up. But today I was totally zoned out from my surroundings and focused on my race. I think something just clicked for me because I didn't fade terribly considering the final mile was hilly including a decent little 3% grade hill at the end.

I was really pumped when I turned the corner knowing I had a sub 20 run in sights. I knew I was going to PR from the second mile on, but I had no idea I would stay strong until the end! It was a really awesome expirience.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!
Post race
Warm down:

The race director offered a free post-race pasta dinner so I headed straight for the food line!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Very little tempo miles.

Event comments:

Johnny King-Marino is a really talented local athlete, but the guy can also host a race! He attracted a huge race and even eight or so Kenyan runners came to help pass out water at aid stations. Awesome race for a Wednesday night race and dinner.
