Pre-race routine:

Wake up at 4AM. Drink coffee, eat bagel and get there. Park. Walk a mile to transition area. Get body marked, set up transition. Go to bathroom.
Event warmup:

Swam approximately 50 meters before race. Probably should have warm up more to calm the nerves but didn't.
Swim
  • 12h 31m
  • 400 meters
  • 3h 07m 45s / 100 meters
Comments:

Goal here was really just to survive the swim which I did. Didn't freestyle as much as I would have liked. Probably should throw in some more OWS so I get more comfortable. I was still anxious which in turn leads me to holding my breath instead of exhaling.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on freestyling more.
Transition 1
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

No major issues on T1. Goggles, swim cap off before I hit my bike. Thankfully there was a pole near my bike so I had a landmark. Socks, shoes, sunglasses and helmet on. Unrack the bike and I am off. Made sure to be careful at curb with my bike. (I've made that mistake before.)
Bike
  • 31m 57s
  • 10 miles
  • 18.78 mile/hr
Comments:

Now the race officially begins for me! Did much better than I thought on the bike. (Already broke my goal of 18+ in a race!) I thought I might have problems with some of turns but just slowed down some and was fine. Roads were clearly marked and had volunteers at every turn.
What would you do differently?:

Maintain cadence better.
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

It never fails...I always do something at a race. Got to T2, took off sunglasses, helmet and racked my bike. Grabbed hat and race number and took off. Ran just passed the timing mat and realized I still had my bike shoes on! (Thank goodness for the click, click, click noise!) Turned around as soon as I realized and quickly changed shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Not forget my running shoes!
Run
  • 24m 57s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt surprisingly good coming off bike. I think increasing my cadence has helped my run. Rained first quarter mile. I was so glad I was off the bike by then. Probably started out a little too fast. Slowed some so my breathing was more controlled. Maintained a steady pace but should have pushed it harder the last 1/2 mile.

Course was supposed to be 3.1 but I am not sure if it actually was. Either way still a great pace for me!
What would you do differently?:

Push it a little harder at the end.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, got food and water.

Nice job! You were so fast on the bike and the run!

Great job surviving that swim too.  OWS are one of those things it's impossible to be comfortable doing until you do a lot of them.

Yay Betsy!

Great job!  I like the cycling shoes out of T2.... too funny  The walk to the race from the parking lot was a good warm up.  Wink

Great race- really speedy for the bike and run!  The swimming will come with more OW practice- it's a mental game to relax in the open water.  Congratulations!

Glad you didn't run a 5k in bike shoes! Cool Great job with your race...def concentrate on breathing in the swim, particularly when you're nervous! =)

Great job on your race. That was funny about your shoes, I ran 1/4 of a mile in one only to remember my race number was still in T2 so back I went.

Good race, especially for being new to the game.

Surviving an OWS; I know all about the feeling.

Your transitions will become smoother/faster and it is "free speed".

And it will only get better from here...
