Precipitation
Total Time = 2h 52m 53s
Overall Rank = 598/1569
Age Group = F 25-29
Age Group Rank = 10/71
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 4:30, showered (gotta be clean to swim in the filthy pee-infested water), ate breakfast at 5. Left the house at 530 - got to the park and quickly scrambled down to the transition to find my baby all wrapped in plastic like I left her, phew :)

Nutrition: Breakfast was piece of big loaf-white toast with jam, 3-egg scramble (2 whites & 1 whole), half of a banana
Event warmup:

Apparently I wasn't with it cause I had wetsuit on, watched the pros take of, then realized I forgot to get body marked! Luckily CJ knew where I was supposed to go so my warm up ended up being me running in flip-flops from the swim area all the way back past transition to get body marked then frantically running back down the swim start again! Yikes, close call (thank you MelissaE :))

Gu 30 mins out from start.
Swim
  • 30m 37s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

This is the first swim in a race where I actually felt like I was trying to swim well vs. just trying to "get through" the swim. It was nice once it thinned out a little and the clobbering stopped then I felt like I could focus on swimming instead of avoiding... but swimming is def still my weakness...
What would you do differently?:

I need to spend so much more time in the pool so I don't actually have to think about how to swim correctly and can just go out there and swim! Also need to figure out how to sight & swim in a straight line so I don't waste so much time zig-zagging.
Transition 1
  • 04m 18s
Comments:

Quoting a fellow BTer, this T1 was "glacial". You would think I stopped and had a margarita or something...

Nutrition: 1 Gu.
What would you do differently?:

BE FASTER!!! maybe try gu on bike not in trans and wear a tri top & use race belt instead of putting on a shirt w/the number already on it.
Bike
  • 1h 22m 32s
  • 25.48 miles
  • 18.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was fantasmal :) I love my new bike! Was FLYING by people on the downhills & straight parts and still passing folks on the climbs. I only got passed about 8 times but must have passed at least 100 people (if not more). Pedaling was good, gears great, no real snags on the bike. The roads were wet so I did slow down a lil extra on some turns but it wasn't too much of a hindrance.

Nutrition: drank 1 bottle accelerade & did 1 gu
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.

P.S. They need to split up the T1 & bike times before I put in rankings for this. Got the T1 time from my watch.
Transition 2
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

The whole shoes always stay on the bike thing worked out well. No socks w/the bike shoes... although they would have been nice because my feet were numb from the cold so running on the pavement down to T2 was kinda painful! Took till the first climb of the run for my feet to thaw out.

Nutrition: 1 Gu
What would you do differently?:

Gu on the run w/the water stop right at the start, not in T2.
Run
  • 53m 29s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Sooo... on that first climb, I got a little taste of "quads cramping on the run" that I have never experienced before. It really sucked cause by the 3rd hill it was really slowing me down on the uphills. I felt like my form held up well when my quads weren't cramping otherwise I felt like I was running with bricks instead of muscles.

Tied my 10k PR :)

Nutrition: 2.7 Gus - I think these helped with the cramping over time.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out why the quads cramped up and make sure that doesn't happen again! Some say it's cause I went "too hard" on the bike (exertion wasn't the max that I've put on that course before though) but I think it's cause my training wasn't intense enough (I guess that happens when you start training 7 weeks out from the race...)
Post race
Warm down:

I forgot the best part.. It was Chrissie Wellington who put my medal around my neck at the finish!!!! YAY!!!! She's awesome :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough training (had pulled out of the race until 7 weeks ago when my ankle made a seriously miraculous recovery)

Wow you really had a good race!  Killer bike time, and a PR on the 10k!  You really can't ask for much better than that.  Congrats!

For Gu in transition, you can just use electrical tape and tape some gels onto your bike top tube, right on top of each other.  You just tape the tops, so you can tear them right off after another.  Then skip the gel in transition, and just take one right out of T1.

way to go!

Congrats on the great race!  Pleausre helping you out in the beginning of the race.  Now I'll have to get my bike on with ya so I can be a top 10 in my AG like you

Oh and X2 on the taping it orr you can put your gu's in your bike shorts.  Feels a little weird but won't take up space in your back pockets.

They were serving margaritas in the transition area?

You really kicked some a@@. Way to get yourself ready and really put it all out on the course.
I'm with CJ, I need to work on my bike so match up with you.

I'm sorry we didn't meet up at the race but it was nice to meet you on Saturday.

okay so a few points...

first of all, awesome bike!!!!!!  that is a really impressive time.  what kind of bike did you get?  i am in the market.

2.) (and i am only telling you this cause next year i will age up into the next division ) definitely get yourself a tri shirt w/ pockets and definitely DO NOT SPEND ANY TIME EATING OR DRINKING IN TRANSITION.  ...especially margaritas.  helmet on, glasses on, gu's in pockets, shoes on, go.  10 seconds MAX.  eat your first gu right after you turn out of the park on the bike.  i am not qualifed to give advice on anything else, but i am decent at transitions.  however, your margarita probably made the difference of switching our places in the division, so in this one case, i am selfishly grateful

3.) that is a really funny story about the body marking.  my last minute emergency last year is watching my goggles break in my hand on the way into the water.  fortunately, i was able to do a macgyver on them.  nothing like a little last minute panic to start a race with, eh?

AWESOME AWESOME JOB

Nice job banana-licious! You really rocked it, especially considering your recent return from injury. Nice when you think about it from the perspective that two months ago you were expecting to be sidelined for this race.

Oh, and the went to hard vs. not trained enough is the same thing - they're relative to each other. In most circumstances (and especially on a cool wet day), dramps mean you went too hard given the training you'd done.

See you on Eagleman.  Quite sure you'll be passing me at some point on the bike, and if not there definitely on the run.  You're welcome in advance for the pace booty in the seconds/minutes before that happens.

Great job out there!  Way to kick butt on the bike course and push through the run with your cramping quads! I always shower on race mornings too.  Not sure why. Just getting into dirty water anyway

I almost forgot body marking too. I walked down the sidewalk from the far side of parking instead of the middle of the road where the markers were.

Nice race!

Very impressive race. Quite a bike time need to see what bike you have. I was having the same quad cramping and felt mine was do to poor race nutrition, never touched my gatorade in my downtube cage. So no electrolytes in my system. 10th in your AG wow. Look out Eagleman.
