Overcast
Total Time = 3h 00m 23s
Overall Rank = 832/1550
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 47/66
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 445am and got some food and water in me, trying to relax. Left the house around 520ish and heading up to the lake, which is around 10 minutes from my house.
Event warmup:

Set up my transition area and sat with Christy (Dolecious) and watched everyone else go ahead of us. Finally got my wetsuit on around 740ish and watched the girls go (Christy, Jen, and Traci's group)
Swim
  • 28m 48s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim went really well ended up making a 4 minute improvement over last years time which I'm really happy about.
What would you do differently?:

Sighting could have been a little better. I think I might end up getting long john suit at the end of the summer. My arms ended up getting tired/sore around the "damn" turn but then that sorta left me near the end.

Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Decent transition. I got my left heel stuck and I could feel my hamstrings seizing up if I tried to sit cross legged sorta. So I just took my time and tried to re-organize my surroundings since I was horizontal for so long.
What would you do differently?:

*Goal for this year* Learn how to ride on the bike and put the shoes on while riding the bike. This also means I need new shoes :) ANNNND maybe a new bike :):):)
Bike
  • 1h 31m 12s
  • 25.48 miles
  • 16.76 mile/hr
Comments:

I think in the beginning I went out a tad too fast and tried to pass a bunch of people in the beginning. Also I think the wet roads had something to do with it. I haven't been biking a TON outside on this course like I should have been but I'm happy with my results. Not a PR on the overall course but almost a PR from last year.

Stupid adding T-1 to the ride. Wait now thinking about that. It was totally a PR. If I took 2:45 in T-2 and I thought that was "fast" errm quick, then I totally did a PR for the bike course from last year. I think I did around a 1:26ish or so. Figuring +-5 minutes
What would you do differently?:

Ride the course more maybe?! Hill repeats? I'm not sure I guess just get faster! I road the course well I think for the conditions. I would love to see how fast we could go if the course was dry.

Ah I guess be able to ride that course at race pace the whole time and not slow up
Transition 2
  • 02m 45s
Comments:

I think this T-2 has been the best one yet. I took the shoes off and rode in with feet on top of the shoes. Socks and shoes on and Bam out of the transtition
What would you do differently?:

Get quicker. Totally need to practice this but I guess it comes with experience
Run
  • 57m 48s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

First .25 of the mile was great legs not cramping or nothing. Then it hit me similar to my last indoor tri; my HR spiked and I had a hard time breathing. Getting side stitches!? I mean honestly who gets these side stitches? I do a walk run walk run up until around mile 2.5 (gravel water station) Took about a minute to calm the F'down and then did really well the rest of the course. Took my own pace and I feel made pretty decent time.

Only thing is man what if I was able to run a decent run and not have those problems. A 9:18 pace could have easily been around 8:50 which I would have been so pumped for.
What would you do differently?:

Run more! Run more hills! Figure out why the hell I have my breathing and HR go hay wire
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed the finish line and got my medal. Ended up meeting up with Christy after the race and did some recapiing of the race. Talked with some people (from LTF, and family) and then got water and heading to the transition to get our stuff and get out of there.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Running I guess was my weakness. I think the bike I did well but just overall speed could be faster but I guess more training/faster bike/aero helmet/aero bars could make a difference. Anyone else think I have bike envy?

Event comments:

Always enjoy this race. Not many people out today. Darn weather!

Big PR and on a much tougher day!

You want to run faster off the bike?  Ride more, ride varied terrain.

And of course run more doesn't hurt either.

Kick azz job CJ!  I'm proud of your efforts on a really tough day!

Good job CJ. Like others have said, the conditions weren't ideal.

Great job! I can tell you that in upping my training this year, I did a lot of interval work, which seemed to help. I also took a couple of swim lessons, which was a big help not only for the swim time but in the energy I had getting out of the water.

Great job on the PR. Wish I had met you as we were in the same wave, nice neon orange cap BTW. I was one of the first people you ran by after T2 so congrats on a great run. I am always looking for bike riders and you are welcome anytime to join.

Great race CJ Smile  A PR is awesome even if you didn't quite make it under 3.  You could always try aero helmet if you want to shave off a few mins and can't get a new bike yet.
