Total Time = 1h 20m 5s
Overall Rank = 147/198
Age Group = Male 45-49
Age Group Rank = 10/12
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30 am.
Like most days, had a coffee, english muffin with hard-boiled egg, and a banana.
Drove with the family in the Camper for the one hour drive to the race site.
Event warmup:

Jogged a little before the pool segment.
Some stretching in the pool area. While race started at 8am, it was staged where swimmers started their pool swim every 15 seconds. My number of 165 meant I had quite a wait from my warmup to starting in the pool.
Swim
  • 10m 54s
  • 250 yards
  • 04m 22s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

The swimming will come with more practice. I knew this to be my weakest event. So, do differently... not stress over the fact that I could not do the front crawl (freestyle, or whatever it is called). That stress added to my hyperventilating and panics each time a was swamped over by water in a breath.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

Estimated time; deducted 2 mins from the Official Posted Bike time.
Put on shirt, sat on towel, put on socks and shoes. Had a drink of Gatorade.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. For me and my abilities, this was fine.
Bike
  • 37m 47s
  • 9.3 miles
  • 14.77 mile/hr
Comments:

Twice had some Gatorade. Probably should have taken in more fluids. Left calf really hurt early on; whenver I could coast a bit, tried to massage that muscle, and sometimes step up on the pedals (standing) to try and stretch out leg muscles.
What would you do differently?:

I tried to hammer the bike ride early on, perhaps a little frustration at my swim performance. I did eventually recover my breath, but probably not a good idea to really push that hard that quick. Especially on a cool day just out of the pool.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Estimated the time, and deducted from posted Run Time.
Parked bike, adjusted sneakers (were loose), had a little Gatorade.
What would you do differently?:

Take 10 seconds to stretch out leg muscles. Had tried to do a little on bike, but with left calf already hurting, should've given it a little attention prior to running.
Run
  • 28m 24s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 08m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran well. Coming from a year of running races, and more practice on roads, I was happy to get on land. Ran well for the exhaustion I felt at this point.
What would you do differently?:

Ran about as well as I could've hoped.
Post race
Warm down:

Couple bottles of Gatorade, banana. Walked around a good deal to relax.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim segment took more time and more of a toll on me than I anticiapted - physically and mentally. Therefore started the bike harder than I should have ridden. Got to remember to stay within myself and with my plan.

Event comments:

Chaotic main entrance - bike out, bike in, run out, run in. Should've set up lanes to make easier to follow to make sure heading correctly. Also, lots of Health Club auto traffic in/out of parking lot - crossing competitor traffic.

Did free-style for first 35 yards, but then was swallowing lots of water. Switched to elementary backstroke, and took breathers at each end. At about 60 yards thought about giving up. Then decided to HTFU and continue. The swim was definitely a struggle, as I knew it would be. There was one guy on the end who cheered me on eachtime I touched the wall; and that did help. Linda (wife) and kids on the sidelines cheering me on.

Congrats triathlete!

Great job of getting through the swim and bike to get on land to run. You placed 1 in front of my husband. It is cool how a stranger really encouraged you during the swim. Sometimes it is a random comment at the right time that makes a huge difference.

Exit/entrance of bike and run was confusing. I saw many folks go wrong way and many went to finish in the bike in. Race director was standing there and not helping much.
