Pre-race routine:

Woke up, ate the least amount of food I've ever eaten before a race. Took a visit to the bathroom, and then packed up and headed out.
Event warmup:

Well first I pulled into the wrong parking place, there was a lot of other people there so I didn't think anything of it. I then proceded to get everything ready. Then about 6 people came up to ask if they could borrow my pump. I guess people don't bring pumps to races anymore. It didn't bother me, I just found it odd that so many needed a pump! Anyway, I started to walk toward the race site, which is normally about a mile walk. After about a half mile I figured I parked further away then normal. After about a mile I hopped on my bike and rode in. So I got a good mile walk and another 1.5 mile ride. ;)

As for real warmup.. I got a slight jog in and a 300m swim.

Comments:

The time mat for the swim was about 50m away from where you got out of the water. I had 6:23 for the swim, which I'm pretty happy with. I also think it was 10-15m longer than normal, not that the distance was off.. just the turn buoy seemed closer to land than years past. I use to hate the swims in triathlons. Now however I don't worry about them and really enjoy them and dogging for position.

I went out strong, noticed I was right up front so I then went looking for some feet. Found some, but then the guy started to go way off course as soon as I got on his feet. I laughed at how far off he was going. I kept going straight, there 2 other guys a few meters to my left so I started to drift towards them. Then suddenly the guy who went way off came back. The 4 us were at the front of our wave, we all came in withing 4 seconds of each other.. I was 3rd out of the water and then I was1st guy from my wave (20-24,30-34) out of T1. That just seems wrong. I used to be BOP swimmer.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Can't think of anything.
Transition 1
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

I had to make up for my crap transitions in Galveston. Not going to add up everyones Transitions.. but at a quick glance I think I may of had the fastest transitions of the day. I even put my shoes on in T1, I think having your shoes on the bike is only good in certain situations.
What would you do differently?:

I don't remember my transitions, so that must mean nothing went wrong.
Bike

Comments:

Even though it's only 10 miles I think I may of gone out too hard. At about mile 5 I was on a pretty good pace, but then I started to feel like.. Hey I don't think I can hold this and still run. So... Then I got a bit worried about pacing and backed off. At the end of the race I think I could of held the pace, or atleast backed off less. I mean my run would of sucked either way. :) Still I think I wore my self a bit too much from sprinting out of the corners. There are just so many turns in the first half that you have to slow down for.

Only 4 seconds faster than last year, but I knew going in that my cycling and run fitness are down right now. So it was about what I expected, just not what I wanted. ;)
What would you do differently?:

Harder, and steadier pacing.
Transition 2

32s.. I can't go much faster!
What would you do differently?:

Nada..
Run
  • 17m 36s

Comments:

I took off on the run course, didn't have much trouble getting into my pace. I just never felt strong or fast. I had some stomach issues and seeing how I barely took anything in that morning I'm not sure what that was about. I know I could of gone harder in this race, but that's what I had for the day. Maybe I just felt like being a weenie. Passed a few more people from the wave up ahead and finished I believe 5th, with 4 from the wave before me managing to hold me off.

This was about the same time I ran last year.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, just be in better shape! :) And don't be a weenie, I could of gone harder. When second place is only 2 seconds faster..
Post race
Warm down:

None.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A bad month of training in April. I must say that the race went almost exactly how I figured it would go. So hopefully I'm also right that I think I'll go a bit better at Combat this coming Saturday. :)

Oh and luckly roger added a half mile on the bike, he may of beat me by a few seconds again if he hadn't.

Damn...third overall.  Great job man!  Also encouraging to read about how you used to hate swimming and were BOP.  I'm there now.
Good to see you.

Great job, man!  Nice to finally meet someone from BT.  Good chatting with you after the race.  Seeing how you live right next door, we'll have to go on a training ride sometime.

24 mph average and 5:52 splits on the run.  Yeah, you had a crappy race!!

Great work even when you were feeling a little off with your effort!  3rd overall is still pretty kick azz!!

Yea it wasn't a bad race, nothing went wrong. I've just lost a bit of fitness, nothing I can do about it.
