Overall Rank = 136/1569
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 18/147
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast: Oatmeal, walnuts, strawberries, and raisins.
Bottle of water.

30m prior to swim start had 1 serving of EFS endurance sports drink.
Event warmup:

I decided to watch the pros come out of the water into T1 so didn't take the time to warm up.
Swim
  • 23m 44s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 27s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went from really bad to really good. I started OK on the first few hundred yards. Tried to jump out of the gate fast and ahead of the pack. I should preface by saying I was wearing a new style of goggle (Aquasphere Seal XP) for this race (bad mistake, and I will be returning those today!). So as I continued on at about 1/4 mile I became "out-of-it" for awhile. I felt tight, my breathing was way off, and all I could do was float on my back and gather myself. I wasted away a good 45 seconds to a minute before I tried to continue on. I was a bit scared because I never felt that way during a swim, and afterwards was able to reflect on the swim and contribute it to the new goggles and how they may have thrown off my vision and balance in the water. I'm going back to what is comfortable. Sometimes trying to change a piece of equipment isn't always for the better, lesson learned!!! The back stretch I felt great, my sighting was on, and I finished strong and ended up swimming a very comfortable pace of 1:26/100yds. I'll take it considering the circumstances.
What would you do differently?:

Never wear the Aquasphere Seal XP goggles again!
Transition 1
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

T1 was included in the bike splits, so I'm basing this time off of my watch which may be inaccurate, but it's a guess. Only issue was my timing strap came undone while taking my wetsuit off, so I had to restrap it to my ankle. Took a few seconds, nothing major. Couldn't wear my sunglasses as the lenses were wet and smeared.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, it went as planned.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 42s
  • 25.48 miles
  • 20.74 mile/hr
Comments:

This is a guess as well b/c T1 was included in the bike split. By far the fastest I've ever ridden this course. And I'm extremely pleased because I did it in wet and windy conditions. I felt very strong, the hills didn't seem to cause me any trouble. I did gear down and tried to spin fast up the hills. As I get stronger on the bike I'm hoping to gear down but not so much to a really easy gear. The goal being trying to spin in a harder gear resulting in a faster pace. I did hold onto the breaks on the downhills b/c the crosswind was strong and at times was thowing me all over the road.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I never have ridden in these conditions before and was quite pleased with my performance.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Quick transition. Wiped the mud off of my feet, slipped into shoes, grabbed my visor and race belt and was off!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 46m 19s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

I crushed my time of last year by 43 seconds per mile!! Knocked off a total of 4.5 minutes! I wanted to start out faster, but I kept a comfortable pace. Got up the first hill no problem, and then picked it up a bit around the lake before going into the neighborhood. Got through all of the hills at a decent pace and then on the home stretch tried to pick it up again. The only difficult thing to comprehend was I wore my HR monitor this year and noticed it stayed so low during the run. It wasn't even jumping up during the hills. So I'm not sure how to understand that, b/c if I wasn't wearing it I would have thought my HR was much higher. Very interesting!
What would you do differently?:

As always practice more hills, but there isn't much more to say after knocking off 4.5 minutes from last year's run!! I'm making some really good improvements year to year.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate some food, stretched alot when I got home, and then got the foam roller out while watching some TV at night. It was a solid recovery!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

New goggles in the swim. Dissappointed I made that decision, but live and learn! Better road conditions and I think I would have been even faster on the bike.

Nice work.  The hills in Frederick help with training, don't they?  :-)

Nice work. I had similar trouble on the swim and had to float for a bit, but you could have floated for 5 minutes and still beat my time. Congrats on the run course PR.
