Subject: North Carolina Water temps
Hey all,

I'm doing Xterra Smith Lake this month and was wondering how the weather has been and if you think I'll need a wetsuit. I'm a swimmer and can probably stand water temps down to 72.... I don't own one so I'll probably have to rent.

Anyone have any info??

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Unfortunately right now we are approaching record low temps in NC (it is 43 right now)!  Burr!

Right now the big lake near me (lake norman) is hoovering around 72 but was up to 75 last week.  We have another 3-4 days ahead of unseasonable cool temps so it will be slow to rise.  Fort Bragg is due east of CLT so air temps are about the same here.  It looks like smith lake is pretty small so I would expect it to be a little bit warmer than the lake norman water temp which you can check here: (http://www.lakenormansweb.com/weather/temperature_water.php).

My guess is by May 31st, that lake would back up to mid 70's.   This is just a freaky cold front.

It will be above 72. I bet 78, so if you had a wetsuit I would say bing it, but since you don't and can stand 72, I wouldn't rent one.

One of the White Lake races was not wetsuit legal a couple weeks ago. It may have dropped some, but no way will it be below 72.

Yeah, we hit 38 up here in Wilmington, Delaware... The outdoor pool just opened and I refused to swim in it...
