Great ride! There aren't many people who can do a training ride at that pace. Congrats!

I can not wait to get to 21.  I will not buy a new bike until the engine can do this so I am working hard.

Nice ride!

By the looks of the logs you are certainly putting in the effort.

moabrunner - 2009-05-19 10:50 PM Nice job. How did you feel? Were you really pushing it to the limit?

thanks!

majority of the ride was zone 2 effort, with 12 second jumps every 2 minutes....

definitely not pushing it to the limit....though I dont think I have much more yet as I believe the power required to go to 22-23 from 21 is significant, I would guess (this is a wild guess) 50-75% more.

merlin2375 - 2009-05-19 10:53 PM nice! Hilly course or pretty flat?

not trying to sound like a wise guy, but for me it doesnt really matter for comparing my times with me, because it is basically the same route I take....my previous best was 20.4 or something like that....

but to answer your question, I would call it gently rolling, nothing major.  definitely not flat....nothing in update NY is "flat."  one small climb that brought me to 10 mph.  also, couple of stop signs, lights that I didnt stop the clock and 2 180 degree turns....when I get a chance, I will link a mapmyride with the elevation profile....

the main difference was little wind, not sure why, but it has been crazy windy around here lately, like 20+ MPH....yesterday was around 9 mph....plus it was warm...no sure why, but I ride faster when it is warm....is cold air more dense?

Sweet.  With that training pace, imagine what you'll be able to do during a race.

Great ride. I hear ya on the wind and temps. I live in Binghamton and the wind has been brutal here all season so far. It is nice to have some warmer temp. I am a morning training guy so when did my long ride Sunday it was 38, yesterday was 42.

Well Cuse, you fired me up I think and something hit me yesterday in the afternoon and I decided to hammer it on the bike.  No crazy brick workout like you, but I hit that 21 mark for the first time too and damn did it feel good.

Now, if I could only motivate myself to run more.

see here is my problem.  last weekend i did a 58 mile ride and i ave 21 mph for the ride.  but i rode with a group and our tempo was 22-24 mph and on the way back i rode with an advanced group 24-28 mph.

at one part we managed to get to 30 mph and mainted pace for 3-5 miles.  yet i still ave 21 for the entire ride.  i understand with group the dynamic is different....

on solo ride i manage to set pace at 23-24 mph unless there is strong strong wind.  still i manage to ave 21-21.5 mph.  have a hard time constantly breaking 22 mph ave.

only time i did it was in an olympic race.  22.8 mph.

So, what's the problem?  Not sure I see a problem here.

I think we sub consioulsy think we are riding at speeds of 22-23-24 mph for longer than reality and sub consiously think we are traveling at speeds like 18-19-20 less than reality. plus, stop signs, red lights and turn arounds slow down your avg.

I stated above, but I'm not sure on the math, I would guess that the power required to average 23 from 21.5 is very significant....like close to or over 50% additional power.  where as going from 18-20 is not nearly as much.  once you get to 21-22 mph, you are talking some serious increase in power output to MAINTAIN an additional 1-2 MPH.  I know to go from 22 to 26 takes twice as much power.  thats crazy, 18% increase in speed requires 100% increase in power output.

I know what you mean, on my ride averageing 21, I kept seeing 23, 24, 25 MPH on my garmin.
