So after almost blowing up in my first OWS over the weekend, I've decided that I should probably look into doing some open water swim practices every now and then during my training.  As I understand it, Twin Lakes is a pretty good place to go for that sort of thing.

So I was wondering if there are any groups that go out, or meet up on a regular basis for training swims at the Twin Lakes venue or any other greater Houston area OWS venue.

I don't mind going out by myself, but it would be nice to get out there with some fellow triathletes.  What say you, BT?

Twin lakes is good, but I have found that 288 Lake is a little nicer venue.  Slightly smaller course, water is deeper than TL's and the entry is better.

HRTC has a group meeting at Twin Lakes on Friday afternoon/evening 4:30-6ish.

There is a group of BT'ers and other non-bt folks meeting at 288 Lake this Sunday (5/24) between 8-8:30am.  Water temp is good - don't really need a wetsuit, but it would be a little safer for less experienced swimmers.  $7 at the gate.

Off of Almeda Genoa ---> Cullen ---> Shurmier ---> look for Diver Flag sign on the right (south side of Shurmier about +/- 1 mile east of Cullen.

Some of us in the area have access to a lake off of 96, like 5min from us. Let me know if you want to check it out sometime, I'll go out there.

Awesome!  Is that Sunday morning swim a weekly thing, or something kind of sporadic?  I work a crazy schedule (military), but would love to know when that group meets there so I can show up when I'm not working.

Sounds good, man.  I'll be in touch about that, for sure.

I haven't been to Twin Lakes, but I really liked 288 lake.  Well, other than the enormous pot holes on the drive, lol!  You do need $7 cash to get in.

It would be great if we could get a regular group to meet up there!

The Sunday morning swim at 288 Lake (unofficially called 288 Church for us heathens) has been regular thing for the past month or so and I think it will continue as we seem to be growing.  Last swim we had 8 people, looking like a few more this Sunday.   Please feel free to join us.  It's a great group with swimmers of all levels and no attitude.

Check the link Tri_n_2_b_fast posted above.  If you can come out, drop me a PM and I'll send you my number.  We are meeting at 830 this Sunday.

Hope to see you there.

Oh..one more thing.  If you happen to be in the Coast Guard then this is probably the first time you'll be in water over your waist.  Don't worry,  a couple of us Navy guys or Marines in the group can help you get your floaties on.  Wink

I started swimming at Twin Lakes about two months ago.  Only met one guy that was actually training for a tri.  He did the Silverlake one.  He wants to meet up and do some more swims.  I swam out there about twice a week.  I don't know of any meet ups that go there.  I like the place, its clean, quiet and two bucks cheaper than 288.  Never been 288, can't make it this Sunday but will show up next Sunday.  If anyone wants to meet up for a swim at Twin let me know, we can get something started.

HRTC has a group meeting at Twin Lakes on Friday afternoon/evening 4:30-6ish.  I just can't make it to that side of town on Friday evenings but if you go, let me know and I 'll be happy to ask the coordinator to be on the lookout for you.

Here's their site.  Houston Racing Triathlon Club   Good club w/ great people.  Just wish we could get some of those stylin' polk-a-dot uniforms...

Looking forward to seeing you at 288 next Sunday.

I'm in for Sunday. Sounds like there will be a nice turnout.

Are there marked distances in the lake or does anyone have any approximations? Just curious.

I would love to join you this weekend.  I have a sick 1 year old right now, so it may all depend on how he's doing by then.  I figure you can never have too much OWS practice!

We have some good approximations... a 300m out and back, and a 600m loop, along with various other combos.  fattyfatfat has a map with some approximate distances.
It seems as if we will have quite the group out there!  Good times!

Yeah, yeah.  I've heard it all.  Shallow water sailor, etc, etc.  I would be there Sunday but me and my fellow Puddle Pirates will be busy saving lives while the Navy is out playing water taxi for the Marine Corps.  Wink

But seriously, I can't wait to get out there one of these days and meet all you jokers and get some good OWS practice in.  Especially now that I don't have to worry about drowning if I take my floaties off!
