Subject: Setup on trainer wheel

How many people here have a seperate wheel just for trainer rides? Did you just buy the cheapest wheel set up or did you match what you have on your bike normally?

I've just gotten a trainer and the thought of changing the tire to a trainer tire for every ride is a little disgusting. I'll primarily use the trainer for interval sessions as it's a little hard in my area to find a road that doesn't have a stop light every 1/2 mile, doesn't require turning that would interupt a particular interval or isen't somewhat hilly. I have an Ultegra 12-27 with an Ultegra hub on my back wheel now and I'm wondering how much of a difference it would make by putting a 105 12-27 with a 105 hub on a wheel that I only entend to ride on the trainer? I can't imangie that there would really be any benefit to spending a lot on componets for a trainer wheel but since I'm kind of a technical noob when it comes to cycling components I though I'd ask.

Thanks!

I've done pretty much exactly this -- beater wheel for trainer, with a trainer-specific tire (or just use an old tire and let it get shredded).  Works fine.

I'm about to do the same on my front wheel, because I just got some rollers, and I can already see the front wheel getting ripped up after just two rides on the rollers...

I think there was a thread on this just recently where many said that they do the same.

I got a separate rear wheel to use with my trainer about 6 months ago and I love having it. I hated shredding my nice road tires and now I don't have to worry about it. I've also gotten real good at swapping out the rear wheel and finally learned the tricks. The main thing to remember is to go to your small (or middle) front chainring and the smallest rear cog before removing the rear wheel. As far as Ultegra vs 105, I don't think it will matter as long as they both have the same number of gears.

Thanks guys!

I think it will make it a lot eaiser to use and less of a demotivating factor of riding on a trainer. So I gather you guys just got the cheapest wheel configuration with the same gearing?

I use the same wheel since mine has a powertap hub. I just change the tire. Honestly, it's not that bad and it's good tire change practice. Motivating myself to do it takes 100 times longer than actually doing it.

I put an old tire on my back wheel for the winter when I do zero outside rides.  During the rest of the year I'm not on the trainer as much, so I typically leave my gator skin on there.

I've been contemplating this issue over the past week.  I ride outside a couple times a week and inside on the trainer 3-4times. I was really not into changing the tire that often. I ended up getting a new rear wheel to puton my bike and using the original stock rear wheel for the trainer. Got a Continental trainer tire for it; friend at the bike store swears it wears much better and longer on the trainer than my current tires.
