Pre-race routine:

out of bed at 430 and made a shake and coffee for the road. made pretty good time getting to Boulder as I had my car parked by 630.
Event warmup:

I parked my car near Pearl Street Mall and made a quick pit stop and jogged to the start (about 2 1/2-miles). Actually ran a little harder than I wanted to but I know how congested it can be at the start and I wanted to be sure that i made my wave. I was lined up with a little over 5-minutes to spare.

Comments:

It was a great day for the race...overcast and cool, but not too cool! Really could not have asked for a better day to race.

I was at the start in time so I just re-tied my shoes and found my place in the wave waiting for the gun to go off. I got a little distracted with my ipod and next thing I new the gun went off. I had a set of songs I wanted to listen to but for whatever reason I ended up with shuffle. No biggie but I forgot to start my watch so I had no idea what my 1-mile split was but I figured it was around 7 mm.

Really from that point it was pretty uneventful. I just listened to the tunes as watching the runner's around me without having to listen to them breath, hack and spit! I did turn off the ipod the last mile just to get the full race effect. In hindsight I should have left it on!

I may have been able to push this a little harder than I did. Not sure but usually in a race there is always a point where I will think about how good it would feel to stop and walk. Can't say that I pushed to that point today. Looking at my heart rate though I was pretty close to maxed out. I finished feeling pretty decent.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing really for todays race. My goal for 2009 is not speed but endurance and that's pretty much how my training has been going. Next year I don't plan on doing anything longer than maybe an Olympic tri. If I do this race next year I'll be working on speed more and would really like to get under 45 minutes on this course.
Post race
Warm down:

not much...stretched...I walked along the race course for about 2-miles watching/encouraging other runner's getting back to my car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was my first race since November and I didn't decide to run until about 10-days prior to the race. I've been running and getting some tempo runs in but nothing too structured. If I want to run faster I need to have better focus and training prior to the race. Overall I am happy with my race.

Event comments:

My first Bolder Boulder was in 1985 when i was 24-years old. Proud to say that I beat that time today although not close to my PR. I have run this race probably at least a dozen times over the years and have enjoyed every one of these races. They do a great job getting 50,000 runner's off and running on time with accurate results. This is a fun race!

Great job! I know what you mean about when you say that this race can reduce you to the feeling of wanting to walk... it is a difficult course for sure. Looks like you haven't lost any fitness since Nov either!

Great race Ray. Next year we should try to meet in person since we're probably in the same wave (BA).
