Pre-race routine:

Left work at 2:30 AM, packed the car and drove to Boulder. I was tired and I managed to look like a DUI prospect to some cop and got pulled over. He let me go, without much delay, thankfully. I had a Cinnamon and Brown Sugar Pop Tart and a Gatorade en route. I got there at 5:30, found pre-registration and got my packet. I didn't see too many people that I knew before the race, but I did see Meg warming up, some F4 Coaches and athletes, and a handful or others but I was mostly doing my own thing. Went to Safeway and bought a coffee at Starbucks... dropped off my post race bag at the FedEx trucks and made my way to my wave start. I had a difficult time getting to my wave and made it just prior to the start of the race. I had to start near the back of my wave.
Event warmup:

No warm-up.

Comments:

I ran pretty well. Started out way too slow primarily because I couldn't get to the front of my wave and struggled on the first mile. The difference between last years race and this years race was all on mile one. Big mistake.

Garmin stats
Ascent: 781
Mile 1: 5:46 AVG HR 166
-- too slow. During the past two BBs I ran this in 5:36 each year, but started too far back in my wave and kept getting stuck behind people.

Mile 2: 6:03 AVG HR 170
-- OK, 1sec slower than last year. I feel the beginning of a side stitch...

Mile 3: 6:08 AVG HR 161
-- last year 6:09 so not bad here.

Mile 4: 6:01 AVG HR 166
-- a strong mostly uphill mile 4; last year 6:06

Mile 5: 5:49 AVG HR 165
-- Probably my best mile. Last year 5:55

Mile 6: 6:06: AVG HR
-- Last year 6:07 so nothing special

Last .2 1:36 AVG HR 169
-- a 6:00 pace to the finish including that burly hill into the stadium so a strong finish
What would you do differently?:

Be sure to get to the front of my wave so that I do not struggle with slower runners again.

Good news is... I re-qualified for the A wave in next years Bolder Boulder
Post race
Warm down:

Changed into dry clothes and had a beer. Chatted with Sean for a while and then met up with Fil and Chris.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of speedwork for sure... sleep deprivation is not a great pre-race tactic either. Mostly though, a poor start and not enough fitness to overcome it.

Event comments:

One of the best races of any type anywhere.

You thrive under crazy conditions and no sleep. Nice job after the week you had in terms of volume.

Yeah, bro. Good run. I blame the coffee. Couldn't have been the pop-tart. Those are golden.
