Woke at 405 before the alarm. feeling good. Coffee 1 ensure took a banana and bagel with me on the road. Out the door to meet Jose at 5:00. Got to the site at 6:15, later than I would like but it all worked out. Ready to stage at 7:15
Event warmup:

Walked around and got the trans area setup.
Swim
  • 23m 53s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 35s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started on the buoy on the rt and never had an issue with the crowd. Great execution. Starter hard then got into a rhythm. Breathing was the only issue. The wetsuit keeps my hips and lower body higher in the water. With the chop that kept my head position slightly low and occasionally got a mouth full. About 250 to the end I started getting fatigued. Not bad but noticeable.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Train longer distances so I don't tire near the end.
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

Long run from the water around the fence line and into tran. I was near the bike out but off center to the right in grass. Dropped my cap again on the jog into tran, this is getting silly. Need to glue handles onto my equipment. Suit down to hips on the run and it peeled off quickly. Body glide works wonders. Little slow getting helmet and race belt on but not bad. Long run on gravel to the mount line. Very lucky and nice mount, almost missed the pedal but landed square on the seat.
What would you do differently?:

Again not much. Try the helmet and suit at the same time next race.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 49s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.05 mile/hr
Comments:

Very crowded. First lap ave speed was 18.6. Progressively faster each lap. Very pleased with my ride. Hills still kill me, need to train harder/longer on the hills. Good hydration and nutrition plan/execution. One full bottle water, 1 gel, 3 sportslegs and almost a full bottle of acceleraid/w/ 1 scoop perpetuem.
What would you do differently?:

More bike training........
Transition 2
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

Good dismount and a quick carry. Very rough gravel but at least it was a short distance. Drank accel and took the sports legs later on the last lap than I should have so the stomach was not 100% starting on the run. Little slow getting the shoes on but overall not horrible.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on T2
Run
  • 52m 39s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Carried a bottle of accelleraid on the run. Worked well, picked up water at 3-5 stations. Should have used more. First 3 miles on goal pace (8:03) but getting tired fast. Last 3 miles progressively slower. It got really hot and I just lost focus on the race. Found myself thinking about lots of things but not racing near the end.
What would you do differently?:

More miles and intervals so the legs remember what speed feels like!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around to find Jose, 3 bottles water 1 gatoraid. Stomach feeling poor, found some shade and did a little stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Still heavier than I hoped at this point in the season. Keep cutting weight and try to get quality workouts in not just time!

Event comments:

Event was disorganized from the website to the walk out. Web had conflicting race information. Late start and post race exit plan was pitiful. Food was good.

Nice race, +1 on it being disorganized after the event, definitely a pain trying to get out of the finishing area and back to transition.

Here's a neat trick if you're wearing a long sleeve wetsuit.

Put your goggles and cap in one hand before pulling your arms out of the westuit.
As you pull your arms out, leave the goggles and cap in the wetsuit sleeve.

No more dropped cap.
