Subject: Vo2 and body fat test results
Local college was offering testing through the human proformance center for phys ed and science students so i got a free body fat (hydro test), strength and flex test, and choice of running or cycling Vo2max test (chose running).

Some interesting results,

my strength in all areas sucks (knew i was not wildly strong, sad how bad it was)

Body fat was lower than i would have thought

vo2 was much higher than i would have thought (maybe explains why rowing came so easy to me).

anyone else had this done? thoughts? useful at all for your training?

I did the same thing when I was a kinesiology student. I'd rather have a laboratory LT than a VO2, but it can very easily be useful for training. The problem is, that VO2 max will change with training, and can change drastically, so it's a test that needs to be repeated.

Otherwise, you're training on a VO2 chart that is outdated, and training slower/faster than you should be. A field LT test (properly applied) can tell you just as much, and can be repeated as necessary to adjust for training.

Yes. Sort of.

I've had 3 VO2 test done over the last few years, all on treadmill. I did BF % once with calipers for kicks and giggles. It was in the middle of IM training, so it was like 5%. My VO2 max in Feb was 78.6. What does it mean? That I have a big aerobic base and aerobic efficiency, but my training and results already tell me that. Ultimately, it's just a number that can be an indicator of aerobic potential but it's just one component.

What was your number? and how do you think it would compare to C2's vo2 calculator.  If you're not familiar here is a link http://www.concept2.com/us/interactive/calculators/vo2max.asp

I guess the Dr. from OSU that came up with this says it's accurate to +/- 1%

Sometimes I think the V02 max test is like getting your IQ test done.  Do you really want to know?

i came up with 80 on there (best 2k at 154 pounds was 6:20)
77 on this test.

there is not a lot i am going to do with this stuff, i dont train with HR on the run and rarely on the bike, interesting to see and put numbers with stuff though.

wow, skinny SOB. Mine was 6:24 @175 which is like 76.5  I haven't done an official test so I didn't know where my real numbers were.  I'm like you though, no need to pay for these numbers since I wouldn't really work with it enough.

It is obviously doesn't work as I got a bad negative number and if I did a run of a lifetime and I would still be in the poor range to make 0 you would have to be in fairly good shape

what was the benchmark for you to say it was bad? As an endurance athlete strenght is not really a concern, still if you used to be a rower and now a triathlete I have trouble thinking you are that bad.

how many out of shape people i watched truck past me on all of the tests for that part;-)

I know as an endurance athelte that is not wildly important, it was more interesting to see where the lines really fell more than anything.

even as a rower i was never wildly strong.
