Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30 to get to the city by 6:30. Parked in Central Park Pct and got a ride to the hotel, which I ended up leaving my sneakers in the car and almost missed the race entirely. Thank god it was my old partner that drove me since she works midnights now so I was able to get her to get back to me before my bus left. Police escort with the NYPD Running Club to the start.
Event warmup:

Ate 2 bananas and drank a Boost. Couldnt stomach any real food. A little coffe with some gatorade. I really just tried to fuel and stay warm. It was cold. Not too much of an actual warmup, just a little stretching.

Comments:

The run started off ok. My HR was way too high and I tried to dial it back but I was just uncomfortable. It eventually came down a bit but was still high. Around Mile 6, I started to get a blister which was weird. I got a pad at an aid station and kept on going. I was taking gel every 1/2 hour and a sip of liquid at almost every aid station. I was cruising along with the 3:50-4:00 pacers and I really felt good. My HR was still high though but I was able to talk without getting winded.

Around Mile 13 I decided that I better back off a little and save some for the 2nd half of the race but that was my mistake. I slowed to an uncomfortable pace and that really messed me up. I ended up starting to tighten up and then my achilles was rolling over my heel. Painful and awkward. My gate was gone. I saw Aunt Suzi and gave her a "Hello" and kept going. She told that I looked good. On the 59 St Bridge, it all came apart. I started cramping, IMLP style cramping. WTF? I know that my training wasnt there but cramping, and this early. I started to do intervals of 4:00 run, 1:00 walk but that was short lived. My hammy's locked up so I was left to walk. Walked basically over the whole bridge and then began a slow jog on 1st Ave.

As I went up 1st Ave I took some salt from a volunteer and kept moving hoping that the cramping would pass. It didnt. I did a run/walk combo block by block up to the Bronx. At Mile 18 I grabbed 1 of every flavor gel they had and tried them all, just a taste of each hoping that one flavor would make running easier. I also got a bite size Snickers which was great. At this point I started to grab some Gatorade and water hoping that something would help.

The Bronx was short lived and quick. I kept going on a 1:00/1:00 run/walk pretty much the entire way. I looked for my Dad by the bridge but I couldnt find him. I kept going and was basically out of the Bronx before I knew it.

Back through Harlem and then Central Park to the finish. On the East Drive in Central Park, I stopped to help some guy that really needed some salt, It held me up for a bit but at that point I didnt care.
What would you do differently?:

Get more long sessions in during training.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked, showered, and went out for Mexican.

Event comments:

It was nice running NYC as a member of the NYPD. I hope to be able to this every year, or at least a few more times.
