Subject: Best recovery foods/drinks after long races.
I have a 70.3 coming up and am looking for recommendations on post race recovery nutrition. The longest races I've done to date are half marathons & olympic tris. I usually end up feeling pretty off for a few hours, not really hungry and with a headache. I'm hydrated/fueled during the race and guzzling electolyte drinks after but I seem to be missing something. I don't know how people can come right off the race and dive into the pizza, subs, candy, and races usually offer. The idea of eating makes me ill for at least 30-60 minutes after finishing.

Any tips on what to eat/drink would be appreciated!

Maybe you just have to practice eating pizza, subs, & candy so you can do it on race day too...You know, race the way you train

Infinit makes a recovery drink now. PowerBar does, Hammer makes Recoverite... there are bunches out there.

I have found the longer I go in a race... the less likely I am to want to eat afterwards. Chocolate milk is a nice recovery drink though.

But yeah... after my HIM I didn't want a bite to eat... same with after my IM. In fact, after my IM I wanted to vomit up any food I ate for the next 14 hours.

Liquid is probably best if you don't want to eat afterwards.

A pre-made antioxident fruit smoothie like Naked or Odwalla brands are awesome.
If I feel I can eat something solid, I will add a Clif Builder Bar for the 20g protein.

Or candy. Candy is good

I love me some recoverite. I can't eat much right after a hard workout/race because my stomach gets upset, but the Recoverite always goes down easy.

Recoverite sounds like a great solution, thanks all!

And don't worry....I'll be hitting the candy, milkshakes, burritos, etc. several hours later after my tummy has settled down

x2

some people have different gastric tolerances, and you've got to find out what you can or can't eat.
