I hear the bike course is quite hilly. How does it compare to ILRA?

ILRA???  what is that stand for.... I am taking a guess at Island Lake Rec something and if so I rode there once and I would say Johans is hillier. Two really big hills at Johans on an out and back course, but overall a very nice ride.

Thinking of doing this as my first olympic. I am in great shape right now, in the last month and a half I have completed a marathon and two sprint tris (2nd in AG in both). So... now is as good as time as any for me! I just need to pull the trigger. But thinking about tough hills on the bike - hurts my legs!

I'm contemplating doing Johans this weekend as well, making it my first Olympic distance event. Not looking for any top finishes only a race to learn from.

Its close to home,, fairly inexpensive, and a MERCRS race.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

There is no race day registration - so if you want in - pull the trigger on friday.   Check out the race reports from previous years - I don't believe the bike course to be very hilly -its all relative I guess for wherever you train at.  The run is flat and swim should be wetsuit legal.  The race pulls very good athletes and one of the cheapest in MI with lots of volunteers.

I think we may get wet this year but should be a step up from Pokagon in May.

Okay, I pulled trigger, and registered for Johans. This will be my very first Olympic distance triathlon. I am both excited and nervous. I will be using this race as a gauge for the longer distances, and to work on my nutrition during a race.

Wish me luck.

Wow, I was not prepared for the heat and sun. At least it wont be this warm on August 1st for Steelhead, right?

Who passed me at mile 4 on the run wearing a BT jersey? Nice work!

I was worried the race would get cancelled as I was driving in....I tried to come through Holland and they absolutely got destroyed by storms last night.  Every road we went down was flooded and could not get across at stream crossings and culverts.  I finally had to take 196 to GR and come in from the east.

I really like this race.  I thought the run was great and the bike will keep you honest.  I was battling it out with the first place female on the bike and run - too bad she started 3 minutes behind me though - but she was a great pace car.

You had a great finish Ryan. I was about 7 minutes behind you (30 places overall down the list). That was my first time at that race and I really enjoyed it. We stayed overnight in Kalamazoo and didn't realize how bad the storm had been until we were driving in and saw the debris all over the roads - I'm glad the rain held off for us in the morning.

I had my best 10k run yesterday and did well on the bike... but there sure were some STRONG swimmers out there. It lived up to its reputation as one of the toughest races in the area. I'll be back next year.
