Lansing, Michigan
United States
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 22m 36s
Overall Rank = 389/700
Age Group = Clydes 0-99
Age Group Rank = 12/25
Pre-race routine:

Woke up @ 4:30, re-checked my bags, ate some raisin bran, read read the write-up on Red Wings game. Racked bike on car. Started driving to Lansing at 5:15 (or so).

Got there plenty early to park in the close lot. Found Chris and chatted around while looking at course/transition area.

Pretended to set up my transition area. Walked to concession and got a banana to eat. Found other BT-ers to chat with while waiting for newbie meeting. After meeting, checked my bike to see if I was in a low gear (I was... I am so awesome).

Went back into transition area to set up transition for real, and ate a gel. I was going to swim a little warm-up, so I wanted to ditch all my other crap, anyway.
Event warmup:

I hopped into the water, swam about 2 minutes (mostly just to get a feel for the water, and I had nothing better to do for a few minutes).

Got out, talked with a couple of people I didn't know. They were asking me if I worked out all the time. (haha... just kidding)
Before I knew it, it was time to gather in my wave, and head off to the starting line.
Swim
  • 08m 8s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Somehow, I managed to find myself on the INSIDE when coming to the first turn (bouy). Sure enough, I had to slow down because someone was swimming breast-stroke to and around the bouy (pefectly fine). Next time, I'll keep a better line so I don't have to slow around the turns.
What would you do differently?:

Don't get caught in the inside "traffic".
Transition 1
  • 04m 4s
Comments:

First transition. I didn't think I was all that slow, but I guess I wasn't really hurrying all that much. You would have thought that I would have been quicker since I didn't have a wetsuit to mess with.
What would you do differently?:

Act like I'm trying to get through T1 quickly
Bike
  • 38m 22s
  • 9.94 miles
  • 15.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Everyone I destroyed in the swim got back at me on the bike. Note to self: get a road bike
What would you do differently?:

Get a road bike. Sitting straight up is NOT aero!
Transition 2
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

I came back to T2 to find that the person next to me was there, packing up their stuff, AND in my spot, too. I excused myself as I ran over their towel as I racked my bike. I drank some water, and put away my bike computer. I probably took too much time in T2. I'll chalk it up to noob.
What would you do differently?:

Be quicker. I didn't have much to do, so I should have taken about half the time to get through T2.
Run
  • 29m 40s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

I actually ran faster in the 5k run leg than I have in just 5k races so far(HA! I say)

It must be that my legs were already warmed up, so I was already at rockstar pace when starting the run.
What would you do differently?:

The only changes would be cosmetic. My Tri shirt kept wanting to turn into a Tri half-shirt, exposing the belly. Nobody deserves seeing the belly... that's just wrong!

Post race
Warm down:

walked at the race. walked quite a bit once I got home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My short legs didn't help much.

Event comments:

I have nothing to compare it to, but it was a lot of fun, and we had a LOT of BT-ers there, racing AND cheering. Lots of fun. Yeah, I know I already said that.

Great race Eric.

I totally know what you mean by the "tri half-shirt".  That's why I was wearing the yellow tanktop over my tri shirt.

It's nice to have a few fellow BT'ers in the Clydesdale group with me!!

Super job!!!  I still can't believe you can swim without a wetsuit this time of year.  Brrrr!  So... when do you start shopping for a road bike?  Tongue out

Great job Erik! Your time was fantastic...sounds like a good time was had by all. I can't wait for mine in September. You've got another this weekend, right? Hope that goes just as smoothly. At least you didn't start running with your helmet on...LOL

DUDE!!!  Way to rock your first tri!  Awesome swim time!  I should have drafted off you at our "training day"!

And congrats on the PR on the run!  That kicks butt!

And maybe a trisuit is in your future along with that new bike...I too am a belly coverer...the tri suit is great for that, AND it makes one feel a bit like a superhero! :-)  Ok... a nerdy superhero! ;-)

Good luck  at Ann Arbor!

Not only did you swim without a wetsuit....you swam DAMN fast without a wetsuit!  Great job and congrats on the PR on the run.

lol....but I'm still trying to figure out how you spent over 4 minutes in T1 without a wetsuit to take off.  Too funny. (But that's an easy way to cut some big time off your next race!)

I'm hoping I see you around this summer, either training or racing.

Laughing

It might have been my extensive post-swim "Touchdown Dance".  I probably should have saved that for after the run!
