Anyone doing it?

I'm coming from Texas to swim 3 miles in it. Looked interesting and my sister, bro-in-law and neice live there... so why not?

Awe, too bad.

Well it's probably going to be a very small race. Last year they only had 140 people in it. Although small, still a better turn our than the 12 person marathon I did two weeks back... HA!

Yeah, I'm debating if I should rent a sleeveless wetsuit for the event. This Texas gal likes her water warm. 70 degrees sounds cold to me.

Just signed up for it... was going to search for a team to join, but was going to ask here first if there were any teams already existing.  I'm only doing the 1 mile swim... because that's all I can probably handle right now.

Oh hey! That's cool!

Hopefully we can meet while I'm there! Of course it better be at the start. I'll be coming out a long time after you.

Ha ha, maybe at the picnic we can meet... if not before, or after.  Don't know how many swimmers there will be... there were 140 last year according to the stats and what not.  It'll take me a good bit of time to swim that mile... not the best swimmer in the world but that's darn good practice.  You said you have family around the area?  I'm from about 45 minutes away, so it's nice and convenient.

Picnic? Well I'm flying in Fri night at 8:30 PM. So if it's the night before, I won't make it unfortunately.

Yeah, sounds like a small deal. I'll bring a hat and wear it... so maybe you can find me in the crowd the morning of. Look for a "Ironman Kentucky Finisher" hat. Hopefully not too many people will be wearing one.

I in a pefect world scenario the 3 mile swim will take me 1:30, that's what I did in the pool this week. BUT that's in the pool. I'm always slower in OW, so I'm guessing closer to 1:40 for the 3 miles.

Honestly, I have no clue where my sister lives with regards to where the race is... HA!

There's all race info. The picnic is after the swim.

Last I swam, it took about 30 minutes/1000 yards doing breast stroke only, so with my combo of everything involved, because there'll be room to just turn and flail around in the water... (lol I love the water) It'll probably take me maybe an hour to finish the 1 mile swim. I'm not doing it for competition reasons, obviously, just to say I did it.

I'll look for the Ironman hat... I'll probably be in:

suit

See you there!

Oh after the swim! Got it! I'll look for the cool bathing suit!

Hey KSH -- Just thinking... because I've been in sailing camp (as an instructor) for the past week with about the same type of water conditions (small river that empties into the Bay) as the Swim for Life water, you may want to wear something that covers more skin.  The jellyfish aren't that great this year and I'm not sure about the specific river that the race is in, but they're big too.  Don't let this stop you as I am sure they will have things to combat the jellyfish but... just wanted to give you a heads up.  I will be wearing the team javelin tri suit to swim in for this reason.

*EEEEKKKK*

I was about to ask you about this.

WOAH. I'm not cool with jellyfish. NOT AT ALL. I doubt they can keep the jellyfish off us. I have a serious FEAR of them.

My plan was to wear a sleeveless wetsuit... but I can still get stung on the arms/face/feet. Terrifies me! WOW. I can say this, if I get stung too many times, I will DNF the race in a heartbeat.

All right... I'm not even sure I'll start this swim.

I read up on these jellyfish... NO FREAKING WAY am I getting in the water with them!!!

http://archive.chesapeakebay.net/jellyfish.htm

There are five common types of jellyfish found in the Bay and its tributaries. Of these, only three are considered true jellyfish.

The other three types of jellyfish do not have such innocuous traits as the comb jellies. These jellyfish, the lion's mane, moon jellyfish, and sea nettle, all have tentacles loaded with stinging cells. The lion's mane floats through Bay waters only during the winter and early spring and is not a hinderance to normal recreational activities. The moon jelly is the Bay's largest species but its sting is generally mild. It is characterized by fringe-like tentacles and clover-shaped red gonads.

The sea nettle likely receives the dubious distinction as the least welcome creature inhabiting Bay waters. It's peak in abundance corresponds precisely with the period of greatest recreational use of the Bay. Once sea nettles have spread throughout the tributaries and into the Bay, swimming generally slows considerably or ceases for the remainder of the season. For those who do venture into the water, the nettle's sting is usually painful and can cause reactions varying from localized discomfort to intense itching, burning, nausea, and cramping. In rare cases, highly sensitive people suffer shock and convulsions. Anyone allergic to other stinging organisms should take special care to avoid being stung as cross-sensitivity is common.

Small sea nettles first appear in the Bay and tributaries in May or June as temperatures warm. Although the nettle can swim by contraction of the bell, its distribution is largely controlled by the whims of the tide and wind. Its distribution is also limited by salinity and nettles are most commonly found in regions with salinity ranges of 7 to 20 parts per thousand.

If this information is up to date... we can go here to track how bad they are... http://155.206.18.162/seanettles/

I wonder what SECTION we are scheduled to swim in???

KSH - I'm not doing this swim, but I did Eagleman, in Cambridge, MD, mid-June.  There were jellyfish (maybe sea nettles...something with tentacles that could sting).  It was pretty much a non-issue with a full wetsuit and those that got stung said it was not that bad, maybe like a mosquito bite.  If you were allergic, obviously that would be a bigger issue.

I dread the idea of swimming 3 miles in my full body wetsuit, but I also dread the idea of being stung.

I haven't swam more than 30 minutes in my full wetsuit and that was over a year ago. Hhhuummmm.

Honestly, I probably just have this really odd fear of them growing up on the coast of Texas. It was drilled into our heads to never go into the water if jellyfish were present. So I'm pretty scared of them as an adult.

There usually aren't jellyfish that far up the Chester River.  If there are, they are few and far between.

xxblueyesxx - 2009-07-06 5:19 PM Hey!  Just spent most of the weekend on the water for the fourth and I think I saw ONE jellyfish the entire time.  Nothing to worry and yes, these are sea nettles.  The Tred Avon is at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, where there are a LOT of jellyfish.  The Chester River is pretty far up from that though, so they haven't made their way.  I don't think there's anything to worry about with this swim... and to be honest, I don't think they'd let the swim go on if it were like going into combat, like it is on the Tred Avon.

Jellyfish remedy:  Pee on yourself... Tongue out

The Tred Avon isn't at the mouth of the Chesapeake.  It's 125 miles from the mouth of the bay!  There aren't many jellyfish at the mouth of the Bay...

All right, I'm feeling a bit better! Thanks.

I can say if I get stung, I will DNF though. Hopefully they will not be around though!

Hey Libby... it was great meeting you and your family! You did a great job lady!

To everyone else... the weather and water was great! No jellyfish! Not one! And such a beautiful day! Really nice location for the race as well. It was a great race! I think anyone in the area who wants to do an OWS should do this one!

I got to see the Chesapeake Bay- yeah, I won't be doing the 4.4 mile swim across that puppy. NO WAY. Looked like it would be miserable.

If I make it back to do another OWS, I'll do this one again, thanks.
