Total Time = 56m 7s
Overall Rank = 3/494
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 1/44
Pre-race routine:

Went to packet pick up the day before and saw all of the regulars plus 2 new guys with IM Hawaii tshirts and Matias, who is a very good biker, very good swimmer and killer runner (14 high, 15 low 5K) and knew that our little local sprint just became much more competitive.

Got up about 2 hours before race start and had a cliff bar, power bar and gatorade. Drove the 5 minutes to the race and set everything up. Went to check on my seven co-workers who were doing thier first triathlon.

Event warmup:

Biked the first mile of the bike course and made sure to check on the sharp turn at the bottom of the first downhill for standing water - there was none. Ran the first 1/2 mile of the run course including the T2 exit and finish. Swam about 300-400 meters practicing flipping and then going under the lane line.
Swim
  • 05m 24s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Setup, who runs the event, had some confusion on the start and did not start the first 7 evens (they started the odds on one side of the pool and evens on the other) on time. Once the race director realized that the evens had not started at the same time as the odds he ran over and sent the first 4-5 of us 5 seconds apart to try to catch us up so we have no idea what our true times was. This affected both our overall times (though it did not matter for my placing) and swim times.

Passed one guy within 25 meters, within the first 50 I was on my teammates feet and should have gone around him on the second 50 but waited on it as I did not want a head on collision from the other direction. At the 125 mark I passed him and the guy who had seeded himself first and had clear water. From there I eased off a little as I realized I had gone out to hard. Felt fresh finishing up the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Seed myself better though my seed time would have won the swim by over a minute. Not do any more pool swims, they always seem to have issues.
Transition 1
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

2nd OA fastest T1 even though I was only a handful of people at the race to wear a wetsuit. This went just about perfect.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 28m 24s
  • 12 miles
  • 25.35 mile/hr
Comments:

Was first out of transition and immediately started cranking hard. Was out of the saddle on the big hill though I was cautious on the wet turn at Reston Parkway and Weihle. Saw 191 HR on the bike, which is the highest I have ever seen. Passing people the entire time and never was passed once. Could tell legs were thrashed by the end of the bike but it is a sprint so that is the goal.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing - dropped one minute and thirty seconds from last years time and this year was wet.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Had a little trouble getting my running shoes on but other than that this was fine.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 20m 24s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off feeling a little sick as I had redlined the bike but quickly settled into my pace. Had the leader bike with me which is always fun. Took a quick glance around mile 1 and still no Matias...I knew he was coming just did not know when. Around mile 1.5 glanced back and sure enough there he was, held him off another quarter or so mile then heard the footsteps and he passed me. I told him to break the course record as he went by which he did by almost two minutes. Goal from that point on was to hold last years winner and get across the finish line second.

Around mile two saw Luna in the lead for the OA women with Ally right on her heels - great to see the two of them flying like that. :)
What would you do differently?:

Not much - ran my own race, pushed hard, had fun - cant ask for much more. The run course is really really slow - new course record set this year is 18:23
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, talked with everyone - saw Shelly, Scott and Scott volunteering - thanks!

Watched my co-workers all finish their races (a few of them signed up for another tri this morning!), ate some good food, had our team picture, headed home, showered and then went over to the Team FeXY BBQ for the next 5 hours. All in all a really great day. :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Run still needs work.

Event comments:

Swim start times messed up and they did not have a water stop on the run course - I have no idea how this got messed up for the 2nd year in a row after the RD specifically told us that there would be 2x more water (last year they ran out) on the course. Contemplating not doing this race any more as the VA run/sprint in also in the month of May and is run much better.

Another great race!!! Way to go!  See you next month in Geneva!  And there will be water on the run course there because BT runs the aid station!

Awesome race

You should give lessons on how to get out of the pool! You flew out, in full wetsuit too!

(this is the only place I saw you on the course )
