Auburn, California

Sunny
Total Time = 3h 06m 21s
Overall Rank = 94/189
Age Group = 45-49W
Age Group Rank = 3/11
Pre-race routine:

Shared a hotel room with hubby, 2 teenage sons and 4 bikes......not a great night's sleep, but a lot of fun! All 4 racers were up at 4:30 am. We ate a quick breakfast - brought our toaster from home! Drive to the T2 area, where we left our T2 stuff. We then rode our bikes, in the dark(!) to T1, carrying all of our T1 stuff. Almost all downhill, and an easy ride, but it WAS dark, and I was worried about the 13 year old - mom in me coming out!
Event warmup:

Just setting up the transition! Although, the RD mandated a 10 minute lake warm-up in light of recent swim deaths, and they did enforce it.
Swim
  • 29m 38s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Better than my first OWS, I felt more comfortable. Got out in front of the pack a bit earlier, and had more space.
What would you do differently?:

Sight less. I only veered off a bit, once, and I could have allowed more swimming in between looking!!
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No separate time for Transitions, but I think about 4 minutes. Met older son as I was coming out - that was fun!
Bike
  • 1h 40m 31s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 14.83 mile/hr
Comments:

Very little flat - almost all up or downhill, and way more up than down. I felt well-prepared, but it was HARD. Counting both transitions in here hurt me - this is my toughest part, and I think I did better than my time indicates.
What would you do differently?:

I still need to work on going downhill fast! Less brakes!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I was happy with this! Sons there again, cheering! AND announcing that they had placed 1st and 3d in their division in the sprint! Woohoo!
What would you do differently?:

Not leave GU in my shoe just in case....that coast me a few seconds, BUT gave me a good chuckle.
Run
  • 56m 12s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 03s  min/mile
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching, drinking the rest of my sustained energy fomr my bike so I wouldn't have to tell hubby that I didn't, eating the great post-race food, admiring my sons' awards, picking up my own!! Waited for hubby to finish half-ironman, cheered loudly for his 7th place finish!

Event comments:

Timing was not set up to count transitions, and that made my bike time look much worse than it was. For the fee we paid, they should have added two more timing mats! BUT....we all had fun, and will come back.

And while sick, no less!!  Awesome job and you must be so proud of your kids.  I hope you're feeling better... having a great event to share with the family must it all a bit better!

And, by the way, bringing the toaster might be something that someone else (non-tri person) might think is crazy, but waking up at 4:30 with the fam.... GENIUS!!

Awesome race report, and great pace on a tough course!!  That must be incredible having your kids race along side you - I can barely get my son to come out and spectate!!!

Nice race report. Awesome to make it a family thing, that must be so cool. Good job, especially considering you being under the weather.
