Subject: Question on Cadence for running
Does anyone know what pace the average "cadence" is sung at in the miltary.. By pace I do not mean time but footfalls per minute. I had all sorts of problems running this last month - no motivation and my heart rate sky rocketing. I dumped the heart rate monitor, downloaded some military cadences into my minidisk player and my running has improved drastically. My heart rate is under control..I am running much farther (for me) and faster at some points. I went from doing 1.0 miles with a skyrocketing heart rate to 2 weeks ago to do almost 5 miles yesterday..at the same or better pace. I find that by incresing or decreasing my stride length but staying with the cadence I run faster or slower but am still very comfortable. Also by doing the call back..I know that I am running at an easy pace. I was just wondering at what cadence the military has for running since it seems to have worked so effectively for me. I suppose I could listen to the tape and count - or try to anyway..but thought maybe somebody would have an answer.

Technically, "double-time" was considered 120 steps per minute.

If you want, I'll sing some Jody-calls for you the next time we have a group run...

If you want I can have my wife take video next time...Actually it really helps to clear the path in front of me when the trails are crowded.

Thanks for the idea! I downloaded some military cadences and they are great, something different for the run. My husband who is in the Air Force thinks I am weird though... alas!

Where does one find military cadences? Are there any in particular that are good?

One of the key things I learned by singing cadence was breathing in for two steps and out for two steps. When I race I am usually breathing out for one step, and in for one step.

I hope this helps you.

HOOAH!

When I'm not running with troops, I sing cadences to myself all the time. It's amazing how these little ditties can make the miles go by. I love that little old lady. Ranger school, Airborne School, SCUBA school, she get around!

While we had different goals for running (women should avg 9:00m/m, guys 8:00 m/m) - some of the cadence calls pretty well required a 4-in/4-out to properly call and answer.  It's a GREAT way to maximize your oxygen use.  (Once I got back from the Gulf War, I found I could NOT get past 2/2 - but then singing isn't my strongest suit.)

It'd be real hard to say the following in two steps: "C-one thirty rolling down the strip, sixty four troopers on a one way trip..."

When I say 2 steps, I meant 2 cycles sorry - so 4 steps - you are absolutely correct. What unit were you in while in SWA? I was with 1st MARDIV and then 2nd MARDIV aka "Baghdad Express".
