Member 12 Saline | Subject: RE: Triceratops Tri : Official Thread Now that I've done my first tri at Hawk Island, I've decided to sign up for all three of the T-rex series. Now I have to practice consistent open water swimming for the additional distance. My son is a typical 5 y.o who thinks it's cool that his dad is competing at events with dinosaur themes! Hopefully I won't disappoint and get some cool "dinosaur" pictures of my own. p.s. My son says "cool!!" alot... Edited by do-or-do-not 2009-06-04 9:08 PM |

Member 39 plymouth | Subject: RE: Triceratops Tri : Official Thread I have been planning on this being my first tri since february. I was in the gym 5-7 days a week for all of Feb and March... then in april I was on vacation for 2 and a half weeks. Unfortunatly I let myself stay in vacation mode for the 2 weeks after returning home and didn't go to the gym at all. I got back to the gym for about a week when I had to cancel my membership due to money, as my hours get cut in the summer. I've tried to get my friends and boyfriend involved in going outside to bike, run, or go to ILRA to go swimming but NO ONE will go. I've even tried bribes, but they are all too lazy! Now, I will say that I would love to do this just to finish. I average about 23 minutes for a half mile in the pool, but the only OWS i've had was in the bahamas in april. I swam laps in the ocean for about an hour and ten minutes and have no idea how far that was. I average about 42 minutes for 13 miles on the bike. As far as running, I do run/walk intervals which take me about 45 minutes.... i know, i know, thats slow!! One more thing, my parents moved to Alabama last june which has been super hard for me as we are a close family. I have been so excited about the tri, but really sad that none of my family would be able to make it.... my dad just called me 2 nights ago and said he has a buisness trip in chicago 2 days before the triceratops triathlon and told me he thinks he would be able to make it to michigan for the day to come see me do the tri. What a bittersweet phone call. I want him there more than anything, but i know i havent kept up with my training as i should have. So, here it is 2 weeks before the tri, and in my heart I REALLY REALLY want to do it.... but I guess I'm just not sure that I should? |

Beside, don't discourage by not having a gym membership to continue training. I was on a budget and I have yet join a gym to train for my tri. The only thing I get a 20 entries pass from Summit place for $85, and I only use it for indoor swim. I run on the street/sidewalk, bike on a trainer, hines drive or ILRA, and OWS as much as possible. I survive my first two tri. If your friends are not interested, you can find new friends with similar interest here! There are few of us from Canton area and we are all levels. (Rottieguy, twohearted and curegirl come in mind) Detroit Dan, usually what time you do your training in Summit? I might seen you before |

New user 25 Farmington Hills, MI | Subject: RE: Triceratops Tri : Official Thread xcourtx - absolutely do it! I did my first tri at Hawk Island. My training was sporadic at the beginning of the year, but something happened at the beginning of May (sunshine, maybe?) and I got geaked to do it. So I pushed myself in training and finished actually running across the finish line. My goal was just to finish. I got two bonuses: (1) I wasn't last overall; and (2) I wasn't last in my age group (I'm almost 46). It was an absolute blast and I'm so glad I did it. The next day I registered for my second tri: She Rocks on 6/28 at Waterloo Rec Area. I've had a few interruptions in my training since HI, but I'm determined to do this second one, and the swimming is double what it was at HI. Eeeekk! Edited by sunrise 2009-06-12 6:46 AM |

The first time I did a tri I wear beach shorts and t-shirt that looks more like a Hawaiian than a triathlete, ride a 24" wheel child size department store mountain bike that weight 40lbs, .
