Sunny
Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 46/72
Age Group = Male 40 to 49
Age Group Rank = 10/11
Pre-race routine:

Not much, just show up and get things ready.
Event warmup:

jogged a bit to loosen up
Run
  • 27m 10s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Didn't know what to expect on this since this would be my first time to run a full 5k without taking a walk break.
What would you do differently?:

Train.
Transition 1
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

I knew this is where I could make up a bit of ground. Since this was a duathlon all I needed to do is change shoes and put my helmet on.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I was 3rd out of 11 in my age group, with 1st making it through T1 in 51 seconds and 2nd making it out in 52 seconds; 18th overall with the fastest being 27.7 seconds.
Bike
  • 41m 9s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.50 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed hard on the bike. Wasn't an easy ride, of course, I was riding my 2001 Schwinn full suspension mountain bike fitted with slicks. It was pretty cool passing guys and gals on high-end tri bikes though. :O)
I don't know what my overall placing was because there were quite a few that didn't register times, for some reason.
What would you do differently?:

Use a road or tri bike. I was wishing I hadn't sold my 2006 QR Tequilo. :O(
But now I have a 2009 Felt F75 outfitted with aerobars and set up for triathlons. It's a much better ride than my QR. :O)
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

A bit slower than I wanted, but I had to shed some clothing due to the temps warming. 6th out of 11 in my age group and 35 overall, but I again, several didn't register times, so I don't know how accurate the overall ranking is.
What would you do differently?:

Hard to say since it took a bit of time to get out of the wind vest and gloves.
Run
  • 29m 52s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

This is where it got ugly and I figured it would. I hadn't really practiced and bike to run bricks and I was forced to take several short walk breaks.
What would you do differently?:

Train.
Post race
Warm down:

nothing

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training on all parts.

Event comments:

This was a good first-time local event that I hope catches on. I decided to do this event out of peer pressure from my friends. I hadn't done a duathlon and it had been three years since my last triathlon (Buffalo Springs Lake Triathlon 70.3), so I was not prepared for the event in any way. All my runs over the previous three years included walk breaks every few minutes, no matter the distance, since I was mainly training for ultras (50 milers). But since this event was local and I had friends doing it, I threw my name in to just see what I could do. Even though my run times were slow, I was pleased with my finish time. I was also pleased that I was able to run the first 5K without a walk break. I was also pleased with my bike time even though I was on a mountain bike. The second run was just horrible, from a time standpoint and on how I felt. But after crossing the finish, I felt surprisingly fresh. Partly due to this event and other factors, I'm back to doing triathlons... I've even purchased a new bike. I'm working on my running speed and it seems to be coming back after many years doing ultras.

Hey, I raced this race, too. Welcome to the club.

A bit more training along with the new bike and you'll be rocking it.

Good job.

Thanks jkron! I'm not new to the club, just haven't posted much. I actually came up with the run course for this event. I also do a lot of trail running and mountain biking on the trails around the lake. I really do hope the event takes off.
