Pre-race routine:

I felt odd all morning. We knew it was going to be a rotten day (forecast for rain, cold). Stomach was upset, hoped I wouldn't puke. Decided today was just for fun - only goal was not to walk up that stupid hill.
Swim
  • 15m 38s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

Decent swim. Felt like I wasn't really stretching out until I was on the back side coming back in. Decent space for most of it, got run over from the side once.
What would you do differently?:

Think hard about reaching on my strokes, try to get a good rhythm for breathing/checking.
Transition 1
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

This was bad, but I planned for bad. Maybe not this bad, though. I didn't have my shoes on my bike, because I wanted to wear socks today... when I did my warmup spin my hands were so cold I was worried my feet would be cold, too. Maybe didn't need 'em, but who knows? I just felt like I was out of my routine (I was) so I kept second-guessing what I was doing.

Also put on a jacket, which was a must. Can't imagine the bike without it.
What would you do differently?:

Didn't pull my suit top down on the way up from the beach - I was feeling dizzy when I got out of the water. Also had trouble getting it off - but this was my first time in it for the season, so I guess I'm not surprised.
Bike
  • 48m 35s
  • 14 miles
  • 17.29 mile/hr
Comments:

Ok bike ride - it started sprinkling as I left, but luckily it didn't get too wet. Toward the end I did feel like I needed to slow down a bit due to wet pavement. My tires are getting a bit old. My time was a little slower than last year, I think, but I was focused on having some energy left for the run.

What would you do differently?:

I regret not having driven the course the night before. I would have liked to know where I was.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Again, didn't do my transition as I typically do (feet on shoes, etc.). That wasn't a problem, really, but I screwed up big time in not figuring out ahead of time where the run out was. (The transition area was in a different place this year than last year.) The run out was down toward the lake, and I ran all the way up toward bike in/out. Somebody told me, so I ran down, and then turned the wrong way out of the corral and ran half way up the side before figuring out where I was supposed to go. Totally stupid. Probably wasted a minute on this, if not more.

Took my jacket off, too, which was the right choice, I think.
What would you do differently?:

Figure this stuff out BEFORE... which I know, I really do!
Run
  • 30m
  • 3 miles
  • 10m  min/mile
Comments:

For some reason, the Pickle Events time is only in minutes, not sure what's up with that. This is not a great run for me, but I was happy that I kept a consistent pace and I think I could have kept going -- which is a good sign as far as my long course for later. I've not been doing much pace work, so I'm not surprised that I ran slowly.
What would you do differently?:

I'll be adding more runs into my workouts for the next few weeks. I'm feeling pretty good about my bike now.

Event comments:

Better than I imagined going into it. Not my best race ever, but that wasn't my intention. I had fun, had enough breath to thank all the volunteers on the course (which were really appreciated with the crappy weather), and to encourage others on the run. All in all, a better day than I had expected and I'm looking forward to my next race!

Great job, lady.  Way to go in some not so nice weather, from the sounds of it.

I admire your dedication.  You traveled how far to participate in an event on a cold, wet morning?

You should think about the Paul Bunyan tri some time.  I'm trying to volunteer at an event to get a free entry into that one...

Good job Kristin!  Nothing like a cold, rainy June race
