Ultramax Triathlon
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 36m 1s
Overall Rank = 38/200
Age Group = F25-29
Age Group Rank = 5/14
Pre-race routine:

Per usual - breakfast was a banana with PB+J toast and water. Loaded up bikes and hit the road. Checked in, negotiated a spot on a very full bike rack (thanks Betty!!) and set up the transition.
Event warmup:

Swam out-and-back almost to the first buoy.
Swim
  • 09m 50s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Since this was my first open-water swim, I just tried to stay calm, keep my breathing under control, and finish. The first leg was crowded, but since I stayed off the front it was not very aggressive. As we rounded the first buoy we got bunched up but people poked their head out of the water and were saying "good luck" and "nice day for a swim" - so cute! I ended up seriously favoring my right side for breathing and sighting but due to my "stay calm and finish" attitude for this leg I was satisfied.
What would you do differently?:

Need to me more aggressive in finding and catching someone's feet to draft.
Transition 1
  • 02m 48s
Comments:

T1 included a HUGE hill that we had to run up in bare feet - good way to get blood to the legs I suppose! Wetsuit came off fine thanks to Triglide
What would you do differently?:

Improve mechanics. Work on the flying bike mount.
Bike
  • 58m 43s
  • 18 miles
  • 18.39 mile/hr
Comments:

Very hilly! I was worried about the first hill so started in my granny gear upfront - mistake! I am more comfortable riding in my middle ring and then shifting as needed so next time I will start there. The hills right away made it difficult to get into a good cadence and I forgot how to climb effectively (until the last hill, of course). However I was happy with my overall mph (pr!) and pacing.
What would you do differently?:

Start in middle chain-ring upfront. Work on using entire leg to climb. Break race into chunks to maintain mental focus.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Fairly standard T2.
What would you do differently?:

New visor.
Run
  • 23m 36s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

GREAT mile 1. Hit the marker at 7 minutes even and felt good. Disastrous mile 2 - I am a good hill runner, but used them as an excuse to take it easy. Average mile 3 - coming off the slow middle I continued to let myself take it easy. This was all evidenced in the long finish chute where I sprinted the entire thing - way too much energy left over!
What would you do differently?:

Better mental focus after mile 1.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched and ran another 3mile loop as a pacer for my friend finishing the Quartermax.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mental Mental Mental! Even though these are sprint distance races, I have a hard time maintaining focus for an entire leg. Especially on the bike and run, I tend to start enjoying myself (and the location) and just flat out forget about being in a race. Need to work on breaking the race into segments/chunks and developing goals for each leg.

Event comments:

Ultramax did a great job as usual. The post-race nacho bar was incredible! Delicious!

Nice work at Innsbrook!!

Looks like you had a very strong race, AND had a good time.  That's ideal, to me.
