Lake Mills Triathlon

Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 30m 6s
Overall Rank = 239/396
Age Group = Clyde
Age Group Rank = 15/32
Pre-race routine:

First Tri, showed up about 30 minutes prior to event brief and kickoff. Really just trying to figure out how everything runs/flows. Picked up my number and got marked, then set up transition area.
Event warmup:

Got into the water, should have done some warm-up swimming but didn't. This had a negative impact on my swim. Basically just watched the initial waves going off.
Swim
  • 09m 59s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was really bad. Didn't warmup and went out way to fast. Messed up my breathing and any rhythm. Too anxious and it cost me time. Goggles fogged up and impacted sighting swam extra distance for no reason. Shoulder felt tight/tired way to early. Might consider using just the lower portion of my wetsuit in the future, depending on the water temps.
What would you do differently?:

Good learning experience. Warm up prior, this should help relax me and get me acclimated to the conditions. Wear other goggles which don't tend to fog up as much. Work on sighting and concentrate on my stroke during the swim. It was ugly today.
Transition 1
  • 04m 26s
Comments:

Took forever to get through T1. Due to the weather, raining hard and cold, I decided to use arm warmers (homemade former tube socks) long fingered bike gloves and put my socks on prior to bike vice run. This seemed to take forever. Time was 2x other competitors.
What would you do differently?:

Buy quick lace shoe strings, leave extras (gloves, arm warmers etc) behind and just gut it out. Took 3 times to get helmet connected right. Slow down and do it right the first time and I will be much quicker.
Bike
  • 49m 14s
  • 15.8 miles
  • 19.26 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike course was longer than advertised. Was supposed to be 15 miles but was actually longer. My computer showed 16.2 and another guys showed 15.8, so I averaged it to 16. With that I did about 19.6 MPH over the course. Very good for me. Rain and cold didn't seem to bother me too much. I think I tend to heat up very quickly.
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

Hands were cold and lost dexterity, took forever to get my shoes tied. Ran with the gloves and arm warmers and gloves on. Time here was about 1.5x as long as others.
What would you do differently?:

Get some quick lace shoe strings.
Run
  • 24m 28s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Run went well. I was shooting for 8 minute miles and did better than that.
What would you do differently?:

Had some more left in the tank, could have pushed harder on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank some water and got one of the breakfast burritos they had. Good eats after a tri.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Terrible swim and transition times.

Nice debut race. Major props for the sockness of your arm warmers. They also make great mittens!

As for goggles fogging, if you lick the inside of those suckers and then rinse them out with some nice delicious lake water, they'll stay clear for the whole race.

Thanks for the encouragement.  Looking forward to Capitol View where I might be able to apply some of the lessons learned the hard way in Lake Mills.

It is always nice to make a fashion statement.  I can honestly say that I didn't see one other person wearing tube socks for arm warmers yesterday.  Not the prettiest sight, but effective.

Thanks for the goggle tip.  I will apply give it a shot, can't be worse than swimming in fog out conditions after 100 yards.
