Pre-race routine:

This was perilously close to a DNS. I absolutely could not move my head when I woke up. My neck was so tight, I could hardly stand it. I woke up several times during the night from the pain so I wasn't well rested at all. But I figured I'd go since it was a long drive, and I'd see if the neck loosened up. I slapped on one of those Therma Care warming things and got in the car.

By the time we got to Buffalo it had loosened enough to where I thought I could get through the race, so I got bodymarked and set up my stuff.
Event warmup:

Got in the water. Swam about 20 yards. Treaded water a bunch to try to stay warm.
Swim
  • 07m 45s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

Just swam a steady pace. Super crowded and some pretty good waves, so I was just trying to get around people. Swam wider around the buoys than I needed to, but oh well.
What would you do differently?:

Actually doing some real swim training would probably help.
Transition 1
  • 03m 53s
Comments:

Decided to take the time to put on socks and a jacket, so this was pretty slow. Generally uneventful though.
Bike
  • 51m 18s
  • 13 miles
  • 15.20 mile/hr
Comments:

This ride sucked for me. Trying to look up from an aero position when you can barely move your neck is not fun. Not at all. Between that and the crowded course, and the wind and the rain, I was ready to be done with this ride after about the first two miles. I just continued on, tried to encourage some of the other riders, and tried to remember that no one forces me to do this.
What would you do differently?:

Train on some actual hills sometimes.
Transition 2
  • 21m 11s
Comments:

Again, pretty uneventful.
Run
  • 31m 8s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

This is one of the very rare instances where I was actually looking forward to the run because it meant that a) the bike was over, and b) the race is almost over.

I'm actually ok with this 10:35 pace. Considering my training, that's actually faster than I thought I'd go. Sad, but true.
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed the finish line, grabbed some water, found the husband, and said, "let's get the hell out of here." Gathered by gear, changed into some dry clothes in the car, and headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training. Lack of mental focus. Poor attitude.

Event comments:

This race sucked from the first step to the last for me. 13 minutes slower than last year. The lack of training this spring was painfully obvious. Such a disappointment.

The highlight, as always, was chatting with other BTers--Emily, Dan, Bryan, Kelly, Ben. Thanks, Emily, for the encouragement on the run. I definitely needed it today.

This race is always well organized but may be getting too big for it's own good. That course is awfully crowded in parts.

Boy, besides the neck pain, did you and I have the same race?

Great job getting out there. Think of how long we'll be able to tell stories about Buffalo '09 and how there were two, no three feet of snow on the ground it was so cold.

Get that neck better and kick some booty the next time out, m'kay?

Cheers!
Tom
