Total Time = 1h 21m 11s
Overall Rank = 61/122
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 15/44
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 5 and got my things together. When it was time to head out, I couldn't find my car key. Took about 10 more minutes and found it in my the pocket of the pants I wore the day before. DUH. Still managed to get to the race site with plenty of time for setting life up. Had a small bagel with PBJ. Stood around and chatted with everyone. Very relaxed.
Event warmup:

Ran 1 mile and did some strides. Got in the water and adjusted to the chilly 70* water. Actually it wasn't so bad once I got used to it. More chit chatting with random folks.
Swim
  • 10m 27s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

Okay, so I learned a bit about myself. 1) I am getting used to the thrash of being in the middle. 2) I am faster than I think. 3) I wish I would have started more toward the front. I spent a lot of that time crawling over people and avoiding being kicked. I took one swift one to the chest and speared someone else who pulled up to stop and sight. I spent a fair amount of time leap-frogging trying to find new people to draft off of. For a change, my sighting was spot on.
What would you do differently?:

Start toward the front.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

Getting out of the water, I had cap and goggles off immediately. Had my wetsuit down to the waist by the time I ran over the mat. The rest of the wetsuit removal was a complete disaster. Comic almost. Complete with me trying to take it off like my 5 year old son tries to take off long pants. Needless to say there's a ton of parking lot ick on my wetsuit. The rest went quite well.
What would you do differently?:

Ummmm, I think that might be too obvious to state.
Bike
  • 40m 30s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.41 mile/hr
Comments:

This was fun!!! I kept picking people off during this whole ride. And I wasn't passed once. I probably slowed down too much on the corners. I have some serious fear of wiping out in the rain. There was one corner in particular I wished I had taken faster because it was at the bottom of a hill and I could have used the momentum on the slight incline that was waiting for me.
What would you do differently?:

Practice cornering in all conditions. This is a weak spot in my bike handling skills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

Not a bad T1. Could always be better. Socks and shoes were WET from the rain so that slowed me down a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Put shoes and socks UNDER my towel next time. Duh.
Run
  • 25m 48s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, not to put too fine a point on it but my backside hurt the entire run. My glutes/piri were screaming from the second I started to the second I stopped. I walked a few of the steepest parts of the up-hills and I rocked the rest of the run as best I could. Looking back, I'm pretty sure I didn't drink enough fluids before the race and I was felt it out there.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more in the a.m. I think probably should have gone for an ART treatment late last week as well because I knew I was having an issue.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bunch. Chit chatted with random strangers. Changed changed out of my wet clothes. Packed up my stuff, went back to the car and called home. Got clearance from the tower to take my time so I decided to go back and watch everyone finish the half.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hydration a bit, the wetsuit issue and my aching backside. Still, a great race for me. A new PR!

Event comments:

There seemed to be a lack of volunteers, which I will give the RD the benefit of the doubt on. My guess is that a lot of people bailed because of the weather. I would do the race again because the venue is gorgeous and the run is an excellent challenge.

Awesome race!  Congrats on the PR.

Definitely start up towards the front more, if you're swimming over people.

Good to see you out there and glad that you were able to stick around!
