I just have to tell y'all about this screaming fast 13 year old in the OLY tri I did yesterday. He's 13 and he finished 15th overall, even beating the 1st place overall woman who is an Age group national champion duathlete.

This kid is going to be unstoppable when he grows and gains strength. Seriously- maybe I just don't know about other fast kids, but a kid who can do an OLY in 2:10:57 at 13 years old sounds like a pro in the making.

He threw down the 3rd fastest swim split with a blistering 22:17, he averaged just under 22 mph on the bike, and then had a 41:07 10K. His T1 was 36 seconds and his T2 was :44 seconds.

I saw him in the last mile of his run when I was starting my run. He looked like he was cruising...

Anyone else experience any fast kids like this out there?

What's the kid's name, and what OLY was it? ? ?    That sounds like another Lance A.

We have a local fast kid, though he's 15 now.  I used to keep up with him on the swim and bike, then he'd beat me handily on the run.  Now he's a lot stronger and a good bit faster than me in all three.   He raced in the elite wave at a big Oly a few weeks ago and did great!

I did the Rumpass in Bumpass Sprint at Lake Anna in VA. This 16 year old took 1st overall.

Sounds a little early to call him the next Lance. I found it no problem to run 6:30-7min miles as a kid. Now I struggle to do 8:30. I think it's much easier to be fast young. Less weight, body fat, easy to recover etc. It's when they get their "man weight" and keep it going thats impressive.

Either way, the kid would kick my trash! Good for him. I hope my kids do tris early and keep it up. What a great lifestyle to start so early.

His name is Sawyer Willingham and he did the Festival of Flowers OLY in Greenwood, SC. www.setupevents.com has the results under the SC triathlon series. This was a qualifying race for the Age group nationals later this year. Not sure how he got to race since 15 was supposed to be the min age, perhaps he had to race in that age group. Wonder if he will go to nationals.

He's a little kid but has some broad shoulders. Based on his dad and his physique now I think he's going to be tall and slender. He also swims year round at our local Y team.

I was talking to someone that knew him and it seems that legend has it he ran a 1:35 half mary when he was 11....

Not sure about the bike he rides. My husband saw it and said it was little like mine. It was a tri bike. If my kid was that fast, I don't think I would have any problem getting him a nice bike! His dad normally races with him, but he didn't yesterday. Not sure why.

I just hope he has a family/support network that will keep him from injuring himself or burning himself out before the end of his teens.  He could have a promising future...as long as he doesn't go overboard now...

Hrm.

He posted a time of 17:54 at his state x-country meet last year as a 7th grader. That's potentially a 1:15 half mary if he could keep the same pace. There is a website where you can plug in times and it will give you predicted finish times based on shorter races, but I don't know where it is.

2006 he had a 21:17 as a 10 year old, that's right at a 1:30 half pace. Possible, not sure though.

Kids a stud right now, that's for sure.

What's really funny is that the local hub bub about this kid is that he prefers running and would do that 100% of the time but his parents convinced him to add crosstraining: ie swimming and biking to prevent any overuse/growth injuries from running too much at such a young age.

It's going to be fun to watch him come up through the ranks.

Okay, I'm a bit biased, but...this was last weekend.  Part of the Auburn World's Toughest Half-Ironman - Auburn Sprint Tri - #5 is mine, (racing as a 16 y/o, still 15) he won the 19/un division.  First out of the lake overall with the 6:18 500 meter swim.   The bike and run course were all hills.......

I'm guessing that the sprint would be 20k bike and a 5k run... And for the bike is 4:46 per mile which equates to 12.6 mph (?) is that right...  That better be a super hilly bike because that is very slow(How many people were in the race...He still managed to get 14th bike split with 12.6 mph)... I'm one year older than your son and I hope to be at 20mph for Kansas 1/2 next weekend(Some people say that is hilly but I've ridden the course and it is mostly a low grade for the hills)  Am I reading this wrong?

It's an 8-mile (13k) bike.  From the race site:

Enjoy extremely quiet roads (no signal lights) and a very tough, very beautiful course. You will climb a solid 1,000' from Rattlesnake Bar park (el. 430') to Auburn (el. 1,430) at mile 6, then roll through some ups and downs along the edge of the canyon to the finish line at 1,300'.

It was an incredibly hilly course - the first 6 miles were shared by all athletes, 1/2; oly & sprint, so I did it too - almost all climbing out of the lake basin, and they were tough!  Lots of people walking their bikes up the hill between 3.4 and 4.4.  The total climb for the half-ironman was more than IM Canada (which his dad did).

Tyler's a swimmer.  Doesn't bike or run unless he's racing.  2 of the guys that beat him overall race tri for Cal (Berkeley).  Ty won his division at Pacific Grove last year.  Have no clue how he'd do nationally, his focus is swimming and water polo and HS competitions in both.

Good luck to you, sounds like you are on track to do very well!!

There was an 8 (8!!!) year old kid at my first sprint last month.  450 in about 9:00, 11 mile bike in about 38:00, 5K in 24:00; he was about 100th in a field of 250.   None of the times are blazing fast for an adult or a kid who's hit puberty, but did I mention that this kid was 8?

Sprint race had 119 people in it.  Oly had more racers, average did 15-17 mph.  Half had almost 200, I think, and averaged 14-18 mph on bikes.  REALLY tough course!

Or a complete washout when he hits puberty. I mean, it's less common with boys than with girls... but there are a LOT of kids out there who are fast as a youth, but once their bodies change, pretty much flame out. I'd say that's actually teh rule...whereas becoming a pro is more  the exception when it comes to fast kids.

That's interesting to note. I'm going to enjoy watching him race every year. Not sure that he's really hit puberty yet... he's still pretty small overall.  I hope he doesn't flame out. He's got a bright future if he doesn't.

I remember seeing him out on the course yesterday, looked like he was having a blast. It's not surprising to me that he did so well. He is obviously trained in the 3 legs, but looking at him he couldn't have weighed more than 80 lbs.  He was tiny!  He has a major advantage over athletes trying to haul around 2 or even 3 times that weight along the course, especially the bike.

See I looked at it from another angle... he hasn't developed the strength yet in his legs... the muscle mass. So while he is tiny... not much to help him power... of course, being so little probably does help....

His time was 1:06 and change on a 24 mile bike course that wasn't short.... so about 21.8 mph
And he's definitely not more than 13... he looks even younger. And I remember him racing a few years ago at 11....
