Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:15, ate half a bagel and some juice. Drove to the race site and parked in the middle of no where.
Event warmup:

got into the cold cold water to get used to it before the start
Swim
  • 33m 59s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

I did a good job of not hyperventilating and going out too hard (like I usually do) and I just picked a pace and did my thing. I actually sighted pretty well this time- usually I end up all over the place but I was straight for a change.
What would you do differently?:

Considering the amount of swimming I have done this year this performance is ok with me. Back of the pack, but who gives a shit?
Transition 1
  • 03m 43s
Comments:

Brrrrr! Got out of the water and heard C, Pam, and Dave cheering. I got stripped and ran to my t-spot. My hands and feet were very numb and that made getting my socks on a real treat. I think they were half on when I finally shoved them in my shoes and took off. Mounting the bike went very smoothly and I was off!
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 1h 33m 10s
  • 27.34 miles
  • 17.61 mile/hr
Comments:

I usually enjoy the bike the most in a race, but I didn't really enjoy this one. This course was harder than I remembered :O. Or maybe I was just undertrained. Whatever. I did the best I could and tried to enjoy the scenery. I think I was low on nutrition getting on the bike because I just had NOTHING on the first climbs. With this course you're either going up or going down.
What would you do differently?:

train more, weigh less.
Transition 2
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

Fixed my socks, put on my sneakers and visor and took off.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 1h 04m 54s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

I didn't feel great on the bike so my expectations were low for the run, but I ended up doing better than I thought. I had to take a few walk breaks on the first half, but I actually felt stronger on the second half (oddly enough) and ran all the way.
What would you do differently?:

Train more, weigh less. But I'm still pleased with this all things considered.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I had a hard time getting back into things this season. IM recovery took a lot longer than I expected so my training and commitment just wasn't there, but that has allowed me to enjoy doing non tri-related things and I'm happy about that. I will be back, though.

Event comments:

As usual this was a top-notch race weekend. Great goody bag, great venue, great organization. I think my only complaint was the traffic situation on the last 1/2 mile or so of the bike course. Both lanes of traffic were open and there were cars parked on the opposite side so things were very tight. There was no room to pass and some people were willing to do dangerous things to gain that extra 10 seconds. It could mean the difference between being 30th and 31st in your age group. Very important...

Very solid race for you Polly! All things considered, you did very well. And, we had yet another great Moose weekend!

Thanks for hangin' on Sunday and cheering me on. I totally looked forward to the next time I would see you and C and Sully on each loop. You guys kept me honest and motivated the whole way!

Good race!  I still dread the cold water, and the hills.  Great pace overall on a technical course!
