Ok here's for my second race going much better than my first (deer Creek).  I enjoyed myself and took it completely as a learning experience!

So wondering, anyone out there doing this race?

Has anyone done this race before?  What should I expect here?

My wife will be doing the sprint and I will be doing the Olympic. I have no idea about the course. I do know that the grand parents will have the kiddos so I might be able to take a nap after the race. Hooray!

I know the feeling, after getting home from Deer Creek, 3 hour drive, all I wanted to do was sleep.

Im doing the sprint distance. Got a freebie from HFP because they didnt have the right size shirt for me for the Coffman race. The open water 750M is almost twice the distance Ive done in a race and my first open water. Im going to be training for the swim hard this week, and hoping to be ready for the lake.

that can't be good.  If that tested water shows high levels of bacteria is it safe to assume the swim might get cancelled.  Given what happened in Oklahoma City and all?

Hey everyone-

Maumee Bay is a great Tri. HFP does a good job. My husband will be doing this race for the 3rd year in a row. He did the Oly Du two years ago; last year he did the sprint Tri.

Yes, the swim distance for the sprint is long. The swim is in an inland lake/lagoon. Every year there is a sign up on the beach warning that children and pregnant women should not swim in the inland lake due to bacteria levels. But, lots of people swim in it. To be honest, I would rather swim in that inland lake/lagoon than in Maumee Bay- from the beach you have the glorious sight of Davis-Besse Nuclear Power plant. Enough said.

We have very few hills up here, so the whole thing is pretty flat. Right now we are expecting our first week of 90 degree temps going into the race- here's hoping that changes. A lot of the run course is in full sun. Be prepared and, if you need to, train to run with a water bottle. Hydration is key! I know they have several water stops, but we just raced in Monroe, Michigan this past weekend and the cool morning temps, combined with high humidity and cloud cover on the bike, made for lots of dehydration on the run course of the HIM.

If anyone is thinking of staying overnight, a lot of the people doing the race stay overnight at the campground. Also, if you are thinking of bringing kiddos, it is a GREAT race to bring your kids. The transition area is right across from the inland lake, which has a really great sandy beach for the kids to play in.

ONE REALLY BIG WARNING- coming in on the bike- unless they changed it, the last two years your route into transition, coming off the bike course, has ended in a really sharp turn and then dismount. I have seen way too many people wipe out there- and some pretty expensive bikes and ticked off racers. Just take it easy coming in off the bike. Have a great race!!!

The swim is in the man made lake, not Lake Erie. I doubt the levels are anywhere near bad for the manmade lake. I'm trying to find a link for the current Maumee Bay readings. They worked on this the past several years, and I understand through 2007, out of every 100 day season, 14 days had elevated E. Coli warnings for the Lake Erie beach.

AKR18- Are from the area originally? My wife and I both grew up in sylvania (Go Southview!) and most of our families are still in the area. We both graduated from high school in 93.

Bananatoes-

My husband graduated from Southview in 1992. We live in Sylvania Twp now; we moved here two years ago. His mom still lives in Farmbrook (where he grew up).

The weather report is shaping up to be BRUTAL for Maumee Bay. Make sure you bring a hat- when I told my husband I had posted the warning about the dismount area for the bike, he said, remind everyone that there is no cover on the run, and they should bring a hat. He's doing the Oly Tri this year.

But, since the weather will be quite warm, and it's an inland lake, you won't need a wetsuit. That is a plus!

A few days out, noticable lack of chatter. Any biking suggestions? The course looks pretty simple as far as number of turns. I assume that going west (shore and cedar point roads) will be windy and going east (seaman) will be fast. Do they make the OLY distance people ride back in to turn around for the second loop or do they continue past the park on the second loop?

Got final prep work in tonight.  Goal for race is 1:35.  If swim goes a lot better than deer creek, this should be doable.  Good luck to all.  I'll be in a grey and orange Orca trisuit, well two piece, my beer belly will be there, if you notice me, say hi!

my final prep was tonight too. Did 750 in the pool then 4 miles on the bike. Its going to be nice to be on a course with flat roads instead of massive hills. I wish HFP released the race list, so that you could get a judge of the size of the race, specifically my division.

If I can keep the bike under an hour, and I think I can on flat roads, then Im looking around 2:15, I hope! This is my first swim at this distance, and my first open water. I'll be in bright blue tri shorts, with a long sleeve blue UA shirt, on a Blue Fuji cross bike.

Banana Toes-

I'll ask Mike tonight about the OLY bike question.

EVERYONE- remember to come in easy on the bike in to dismount. It is a wicked sharp curve.

So how did everybodies race go?  I cut my time from deer creek by 5 min.  No splits yet, but still had problems with the run.

Splits are up now!

I did awesome! My first open water AND my first 750, and I was only about 2x as long as the 300 yard indoor at Coffman YMCA Tri. 23:20 in the water. The trick for me is just keep swimming, no matter what stroke I use, as I learned yesterday. I felt competitive, and I saw no signs of the safety truck!!

My bike was terrific! I had a very respectable 53:37 on the bike, and I averaged 15.4 MPH! The course was very flat, but the wind added nice resistance. I managed to pass several riders, and I kept at least two people at bay the whole ride on the bike.

My walk was a disappointing 47:56. I am a walker, so I expect to be slower than most, and I didn't come in last, but I was a minute slower than my previous 2 tris. The heat, the added exertion on the bike and in the pool probably contributed, but I didn't train for the walk either. I have done enough 5k's to know about where I am, and I knew I was slow. Maybe next time I'll throw a watch on in T2, and that might help me get a little more out. Plus training of course, I kjept thinking I could get by without it on the 5k, but I really need to include it. Several folks I passed on the bike wound up getting back their time during the 5k, and I'm frankly bummed by that. I need to get to the point where Im running.

This was my last race in ohio. I have done a ton of races with Run Wild/HFP and other companies, and they were kind enough to announce my leaving and say kind things about me. I was really glad to get to do 3 triathlons here. Plus some folks were kind enough to tell me that my attitude on the course was very uplifting to them, and it was nice for people to go out of their way to stop to tell me that!

I have lost almost 70 lbs since I started walking/competing; I have a long way to go, but I know I will get there.
