Im just south of Boston and I would give it a 5 out of a 10...  Few lakes within 10 min drive.  OK, bike roads but traffic can be hard.  Run, ditto for bike roads...  Early Sunday morning are the BEST.  Weekdays,,, watch out!

Livestrong191 - 2009-06-10 12:35 PM Um Have we allllllllllllllllll forgotten North Carolina huhuhuh. Beachs , the mountains, great weather, tons of clean natural lakes, well kept roads. Cheap to state to live in  compared to CA and Co. Friendly people. What else do I have to say ,this place is epic lol

I have to second NC as a good candidate.  I have access to hundreds of miles of country roads from my house just north of Charlotte, although I will admit to the occassional redneck dickwad in his duelie pick up and #3 Dale Earnhardt sticker in the back window being inconsiderate on the roads.  The hills are just about right for noobs like me with a few challenging ones here and there if you know where to go.  There are probably a dozen sprint tris a year within a 30-minute drive of my house plus at least half a dozen longer duathlons or triathlons.  There are at least five triathlon specialty stores in Charlotte and plenty of pools public and private.  There is a kids triathlon series held at a local pool 10 minutes from my house.  We get four real seasons every year, but none of them are so extreme that you can't go outside and run or ride if you have the right gear.  Cost of living compared to several of the other places mentioned is absolutely no contest.  Finally, we now have an official IM in Augusta, GA which is only about 2 1/2 hours drive from here and the Beach to Battleship full IM distance in Wilmington, NC if you want another option.

Oh yeah, the 2009 Duathlon Championships are being held at the Lowe's speedway 10 minutes from my house in September.

I am noticing too many votes for your own states.  The reason for this is obvious.  You know your states better than any other.  I guess I am lucky that I travel for work and been a lot of places.  Most ,for just a day or so but you can notice things pretty quickly..

Yes, the reason is obvious.  Dorothy said it best, "There's no place like home...There's no place like home..."

Especially when you live in NORTH CAROLINA! Laughing

True. However, I have lived in many different states and many were not tri friendly. Louisiana, for instance. Not much offered in the way of races or events (except in Nola, which I was not near). I almost never saw people outside running or biking....the weather was too hot/muggy 75% of the year and the open water swimming was zero due to gators, lol.

Not sure if anyone has said florida before. Of course i am a bit biased but the truth is our Tri community and races are quite awesome.

Minnesota. Fabulous biking, running, and swimming options. One of the best tri stores in the country, a jam-packed race schedule with high-quality races, and one of the most highly competitive race scenes anywhere.

Plus we have the winter off season to get fat and out of shape. I'm absolutely amazed at the Tri scene here in MN. We're only in our second year of putting on Tri's in the Rochester area and we are already selling out.
