Subject: bike with stress fracture in foot?
Yesterday, about one mile into a four mile run, I started experiencing some mild pain in my left foot. At mile two it was much worse and I alternated between walking and what I guess you could call a shuffle. I made it the rest of the four miles, but it was not easy.

I saw the Ortho today and I have a stress fracture in the middle of the top of my foot. I am in a boot for 3-6 weeks. Pretty bummed because I was planning on doing the 184.5 miles of the C&O canal towpath (five day trip) beginning in 10 days. The ride is almost entirely flat. I have not ruled out going but it depends how I progress over the next week or so.

I was wondering if any one else has ever had to ride with such an injury and would not mind relaying their experiences, thoughts, or ideas.

Thanks.

Larry

P.S. Yes, of course, the Ortho said not to go. They also said no to my 41 mile backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail last spring a week after severely spraining my ankle.

Been there, done that. 8wks, both legs. Tibial in both. Use the boot. Take it EASY. Very easy.

You want it to heal. Also, go easy coming back too!

If it hurts in any way, don't do it. And, seeing as most people lie to themselves over whether it REALLY hurts or not...don't do it.

Light trainer spinning, no mashing, no climbing, after a few weeks.

FWIW, I feel your pain. Last year, with ZERO warning, I got a stress fracture in my third metatarsal the day before I left for my A race.

You might want to ask Steve8 about this one.

Heal well!

I found a link with more information that you ever wanted to know about stress fractures.

Stress Fracture

If you have a good working relationship with your bone doctor and want to keep it that way, you might want to do what he recommended that you do.

Thanks for the comments and great info. I guess the C&O canal will just have to wait for now. I will try again after I am healed.

I will be back soon enough.

Be safe. Stay healthy.

What bone did you break? I fractured my third metatarsal last year and was in a boot for 6 weeks. However, my doc gave me the OK to swim (no kicking and no pushing off) and bike (no hill climbing/no standing climbs) as long as there was no pain during those activities.
The main issue with my fracture was not to bend the toes up (running or walking motion) but in a cycling shoe, the foot is forced to be immobile in that area so it was OK (same stability as I got from the boot).
This is my story -but do what your doc says is right for you.

I broke my 3rd metatarsal ( middle bone)  I planned to ride through out the healing process. my Dr talked me out of it. I did swim the whole time using a pull bouy so I didnt kick. I spent almost 8 weeks in the boot mostly because my Doc knows me very well and knew Id over do it if he let me loose. I was very suprised how fast I have bounced back. i actually focused on swimming, the one event I neglected the most. I have done 2 sprints since coming out of my boot and actually PRd last week. Listen to your doc. Stay off your foot and heal. It is not worth it to push it now and not heal right. Did I mention my new P3 came in the week I broke my foot. So I had that to look at for 2 months. Talk about torture.
