How can i determine my avg hr during a 5k race (to replace the recommended 30 min. tt)? I know the time trial has you calculate the last 20 min of the run, but how would I determine with a finish time under 30 minutes?

You don't use a 5k to determine your zones.  You cannot extrapolate well from that.  For example, I typically would average around 191 with a peak at or above 200 in a 5k.  That is crazy high to even try to estimate an LT value.  If you really wanted to get a closer approximation then you could potentially use a 10k (even then it will be a little high of an approximation).

Best thing to do is the proper field test when you are rested and warmed up.
