They said the '09 course is the same as the '08 (for once).

Edit:  Wow, in general pretty flat!!  Far cry from what I am used to with Baltimore and Boston!

the course has only changed slightly over the last 5 years.  there is a pretty big hill from mile 1 till mile 2.  its bascially a moderate to heavy hill from the start to just passed mile 2.  then a serious downhill, super fast from 2 till 4.  '08 had us running down by the canal road and then a nice uphill at about mile 6 or so.  from then on its flat till the finish for the most part.  however the slight elevation changes on the 14th st bridge (mile 19) feels like Mt Everest if you haven't saved enough!!!!!!!

How's everyone's training going??  15 weeks to go (I call the last week "Zero week" on my schedule).

Did 42.6 miles last week with a long run yesterday of 16.  A little to rambunctious as I ran it at 7:19 average pace.

Got 49 on the schedule this week with a 17 miler.

Basically just getting started.  Actually hired a coach for this one to see how that works vs doing my own plan for races.

I believe I am up to 25 this week

OH we are supposed to be training for this????
I am still doing fairly lower milage now, ran 22 miles last week and a long run of 9 miles.

Training is going well so far!  34 miles last week with a 16 mile run yesterday, but missed an 8 miler.

48 for this week with a 17 mile run on Sunday.

Just did my 8 miler last Sunday. I have to stay injury free this season. Last year I got really bad tendonitis from overuse, so lots of trail and off-road long runs for me this year.

Yay for running with your dad!!! How amazing that he is still doing this at 72. I'm running with my dad too, he had a massive heart attack while we were training for Houston this year so the fact that he's back and will run a marathon less then one year since his heart attack is just amazing to me

Oh, and on the training front, it is slow and painful here. It's just too hot! I'm putting in the miles though, did a 16-er last weekend and will do 18 this weekend.

Got my 17 in yesterday.  Man what a crappy run!  But did do 49.8 miles last week.  Most in a week since around February of '08.

54 on the schedule this week with a long run of 18.

Had my first long run this weekend not quite that long, 10 miles but felt good to get out.

First time I realized there was a thread for the MCM...glad I found it!

MCM will be my first marathon so I am keeping the training plan to a "novice" plan (Higdon Novice 2) this go round.  Hoping to run a 3:30 (which the McMillian run calculator says shouldn't be a problem if I am trained properly).  Probably too high of expections for my first 26.2 but that is what goals are for!

It has been an adjustment trying to do marathon training while still tri training but so far, so good.  It is an even bigger adjustment now that my wife and I are both marathon training (she is doing NYC) and we both still tri training (and we have a three year old).  I get stuck doing my long ride in the middle of the Sunday afternoon...yuck!

I am running for the Injured Marine Sempef Fi fund (link below if ya wanna donate ;-).

Question for the experienced marathoners:

How long does it take to get used to running at a "slower" pace?  Up until this point, my long training runs (for half marathons) were 8:00/m.  Everything I have read says that long runs should 30-90 seconds slower than what you planning for marathon pace (which will be 8:00).  I have had a hard time adjusting my times down slower.  When I consiously try to run slower, my times are all over the place.  Luckily I have a 305 coming my way in a few weeks but any interim advice is appreciated!

I use the McMillan calculator to figure out the zones that I run in and stay within those (based on my latest race times).  So my normal run of the mill runs are from 7:24 - 7:54 and my LSD runs are 7:24 - 8:24.  Then recovery ones are 8:24 - 8:54.

You should be basing your pace ranges on your current fitness, NOT what you think you would like to run in the race.  And the 30 - 90 second thing is just a guideline.  Some runs you are just "clicking" and it is okay to be out of that range.  As an example, my 16 miler two weeks ago things felt great and I ran 7:19 pace.  But last weekend's 17 sucked and I was barely under 8:00 pace.

Well the humidity is returning, I reckon it is time to start getting up early for my long runs. Can someone tell me that we will have a nice low humidty day and cool temps for the MCM. (the answer I am looking for is YES)

My problem with the McMillan calculator is that based on my last 1/2 time, it predicts me to run the marathon faster than I really want (3:18) to train for in the brutal summer heat down here.   My biggest issue with the McMillan times is the tempo runs of 7:00 - 7:23...it is hard for me to keep that pace up in this summer heat.   The easy/long/recovery time ranges are easily done.

Since it is my first mary, I kinda just want to "enjoy" this one (and next year when I hit 35...try and get the 3:15:59 and join u in Boston).   But I am also torn in wanting to see if Boston qualifiing in 2010 is reachable.   Guess I will just see how I feel as this progresses.

You said you were following one of Hal's novice plans?  Forget even thinking about using one of those if you are even remotely contemplating a BQ (and you aren't already easily there in general).  There is simply not enough volume and tempo work in his novice plans to have you close to ready.  I used the Int. 1 for my first marathon that I trained for and made the stupid mistake of thinking I could hit a BQ even though I did not train at all at the pace needed.  It was a disaster.  Completely ill-prepared for the distance and pace I went.

No no no...thinking about trying to qualify in fall 2010 at the earliest.  Being my first I just want to get through it w/o killing myself and mentally prepare myself for a harder run.   Yeah I know the Higdon plans are way light on milage (but after my last tri I am adding another weekend run to bump up the weekly milege) .  I had longer weeks when I put in serious time for my half marathons!  If I were trying for boston, I would also retire my bike and jammers for the summer.

Looks like a 95% chance that I am out of the marathon AGAIN this year - possibly developing a stress fracture. Taking 6 to 8 weeks off now would be too detrimental to my training and I wouldn't be able to ramp up safely at that point. Sorry to miss it again.

Just did my long run for the week (10 mi.) and the humidity was killer. Felt good, though. I am using the Runner's World Marathon Challenge plan from Yasso. It's a 16 week plan and so far is working out well. I am trying for a 4:00-4:30 as it is my first full.

Marine Corps will be my second marathon. I did Richmond last fall and have been looking forward to my next race ever since. I finished Richmond in just under 6 hours and hope to improve my time a bit this time around. See you all at the starting line Smile

You won't see me at the starting line after all, but you WILL see me at one of the water stops I decided to volunteer, since I am not going to run it after all.

Bummer about the stress fracture - I hope you heal quickly!
