Total Time = 2h 53m 29s
Overall Rank = 115/237
Age Group = 40-49 Males
Age Group Rank = 18/30
Pre-race routine:

Got to the event early and was rewarded with a parking lot near the transition area! Lesson learned from last week. I was planning on coming a little later but I woke up at 4:30 AM, knew I wasn't going to sleep anymore, so I had a casual breakfast, finished loading the car and hit the road. Got to the event and the transition spots were pre-assigned so that I ended up with one on the far end of the rack near the fence. Not a big deal, it actually gave me more room to spread out.
Event warmup:

Decided to wear the full wet-suit vice just the lowers. During the event I did not feel cold at all, actually a little on the warm side. I will have to look at this in the future. Got into the water earlier and stayed much more relaxed. Spoke with Clint during the wave staging and that helped to distract any anxiety.
Swim
  • 34m 59s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Big picture swim went well, felt better and now have a more realistic idea on how these things work. One issue for me is swiming in a straight line. I tended to zig-zag thoughout the event and probably swam an extra 50-100 yards as a result. I would look up and be thinking, where in the hell is everybody!
What would you do differently?:

Lasso the guy who went by like a fish with my wetsuit cord and hold on for the ride.
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

T1 went way better than last week. 4:26 last week and only 1:48 this week. I can't complain it seemed to go very smooth.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 17m 42s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.19 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike went well for me, averaged 19.2 MPH. I was passing and being passed by the same person just about the whole ride, helped to push me along.

Legs felt like lead the first 5-7 miles and I was very slow on the initial set of hills. I was surprised how tired my legs felt after the swim?

Legs recovered somewhat and I had a good ride and picked up the pace on the way back. I was only passed by a few people and passed quite a few.

I taped 3 gels on my top tube and ate them all during the ride, about 20 minutes in and every 20 thereafter. I also had some accelerade in one bottle and water in the other. Seemed to work well, I might water down the accelerade a little more in the future.
What would you do differently?:

Extra day of rest prior to event, legs felt a little heavy.
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

T2 went much better this week. I unstraped by shoes and had them loose about a 1/4 mile from the finish. I was able to get one foot out but the other hung up a bit. Ended up running through transition with one shoe on and the other hanging from my pedal. Must have looked pretty cool I must admit as I had some fans of this technique. Quick change to the run, I even used those elastic shoe lace thingies.
What would you do differently?:

Practice the shoe unstrapping and foot removal more.
Run
  • 57m 26s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

Averaged 9:15 per mile according to result print out. Much slower than I anticipated. Legs felt like lead the first two miles, which also included a couple of good hill climbs. This of course added to the fun, not really. Felt great when I got into the shaded areas. I was really overheating in the sun and felt dehydrated. I was really missing my camelback.

I don't train on grass and trails and this also impacted me and I did feel much slower on this surface.
What would you do differently?:

I might run with a camelback. I like to sip water while running vice trying to chug it down every mile. I might actually be quicker with the camelback.

Due some more trail/soft ground running.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some fluids and ice and meet up with some of the donki nation in attendance.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Might need more taper for these old legs, 1 week back to back with hard efforts on both ends might have had an impact.

Event comments:

Little disappointed in the post race food/spread. Had plenty of fluids but only some lame pizza for eats. Course was good, I would prefer less trails/grass and more hard surface for a race.

I think the run from the beach into the swim calculated into the swim times but I can't remember. Anyway the swim went much better than last week. No problems with breathing or tiredness, I think I could have pushed it more, but this being my first Olympic I wanted to keep some in the tank not knowing what to expect.

Great job Greg!  You'll get the sighting down on the swim... maybe just draft someone, as long as they don't zig-zag you'll be fine.
