Pre-race routine:

We came down to Maryland on Friday. I ended up getting sick on Friday night. The throwing up kind of sick. This passed. I woke up feeling ok. Went to load up the bikes and the tire went flat. Since we were going to the expo before racking the bike I was just going to have them fix it. This was a good decision because I had a really big gash in my tire. They took care of me. PHEW!!

Race day morning was pretty standard. Got up, drank coffee, ate a peanut butter bagel, and off we went.
Event warmup:

There was really no warm up for me here. My wave didn't go off until over an hour after we were allowed to swim and I usually use a warm-up swim. Perhaps I should think of a different way to warm-up in case this happens again.
Swim
  • 39m 9s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

My goal for the swim was to beat, if only by seconds, my last 1/2 swim. This was accomplished. What I like most about this swim was that I felt MUCH more relaxed than I usually do. Sighting was good. I DO have to work on maneuvering through people, though. There were a few times were I was slowing down because I wasn't sure how to get through the wall of people in front of me. I know the answer isn't to start in the very front. It can't be. Then I would become a wall for others :-) I did well in sighting, rounding bouys, staying calm, etc... Just have to work on speed.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. I think the only thing that limited my ability to perform was my lack of speed, which I'm currently working on, and I was faster this 1/2 than last.
Transition 1
  • 02m 46s
Comments:

This went fine. I was full of energy coming out of the water. No walking here.
What would you do differently?:

I know that I have to do all the sorts of things that others do like, putting shoes on the bike, jumping on my bike, etc...I'm just happy with my transitions. Once I perfect everything else then I will start working on this stuff.
Bike
  • 3h 05m 25s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.12 mile/hr
Comments:

Ok. I think I went out waaay too fast on the bike. I was cruising the first portion of this course. There was also a tail wind, but I pushed it pretty hard. I suffered in the back portion as a result, which also included the wind. The wind didn't stop. It was in your face. It wasn't huge gusts of wind. It was more like a steady head wind. It was tough, though.

I had some issues with the inner part of my thigh during the bike. I'm not sure what that was and I was afraid it was going to effect my run. It didn't, but it certainly made the ride less comfortable than it should have been. My back also started getting a bit sore towards the end of the ride. That was pretty easy to deal with, though.
What would you do differently?:

hmmmm. Ride more, specifically prepare for long long flats with steady gusts of wind, but mostly just the riding more.
Transition 2
  • 04m 4s
Comments:

Same as t1. I'm cool with this.
Run
  • 2h 25m 38s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

At first, I was worried about whether my leg was going to bother me on the run. I immediately determined that it wasn't going to be a problem. Off I went. I was feeling pretty good. I started at a about a 9:15 pace. I determined this by talking to a fellow who thought we could run together the entire way if we were both going to maintain this pace. There were some mental blocks I had, but 6 miles went by very quickly overall.

6 miles it is where it all fell apart. My hamstring (an almost 100% healed injury, so I thought) starting aching so bad. It was wierd to come on all of the sudden like that. I shortened my stride and tried to suck it up. At this point I fell off from the guy I was running with. I knew I was starting to have trouble. Between mile 7 and 8 I saw Bob and told him to hurry up and catch up, since he looked strong at this point, and I was slowly weakening. At mile 8 I had to start the whole walk/run thing, which was a bad idea because at this point it's very hard to get started again. I did a good job and MOSTLY ran, but there was certainly some walking in there.
What would you do differently?:

I was doing good for most of the run and holding a pace I would have been happy with, so if my hamstring didn't start bothering me I think I would be happy. At that point I was holding a pace to not only break 6 but possibly break 5:45. I'm certain that if my hamstring didn't bother me I would have slowed down at some point in the second half of the run but I would have been ok with that.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around a bit, ate some food, watched Linda get her award.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I need to ride & run more. I believe I swim enough.

Event comments:

This is a good race. I liked it. The only thing I didn't like was the boredom of the run. That could be my problem - I don't want to blame the race for that ;-) I would certainly do this race again.

Nice race! I'm with ya on the boredom of the run thing.... especially for folks like me (old, slow, and starting in the very last wave!) Great job!
