Pre-race routine:

Ate bagle with PB & honey and drank some OJ. Hubby & I met Tammy (tnickerson) in hetel lobby at 6:00AM. We loaded up my car with the bikes and gear. The hotel was only about 10 minutes from the race site - perfect. This race has 2 seperate transition areas. We put our running gear in T2, picked up our chip, and were body marked. Tammy, Andy, and I then walked with our bikes 2 miles to T1 and the swim start. Ate a banana and set up in T1.
Event warmup:

2 mile walk to T1 and start.
Swim
  • 29m 8s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

loop course. Cold! Most people had on wetsuits. I swam in tri shorts & sport bra. The water was fairly clear. All the female olympic racers stated together. I entered the water first. I noticed 2 female swimmers pass me. I seemed to start slow. It took me about 2/3 of the 1st lap to find my pace. the two other females stayed not too far in front of me. We passed some of the men that started in the wave before us. I was relaxed during the swim. I caught and passed the other females toward the end of the 2nd loop. 1st female out of water.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster. Find my pace faster.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

no T1 time was given. It is either added to the swim or to the bike time.

I struggled getting my dry tri top over my wet body & sport bra. Took a little time. I'm usually slow in transition & T1 is the slowest.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 58s
  • 23 miles
  • 18.66 mile/hr
Comments:

Out and back. Very flat course. Country roads, so there were some rough areas. Road into town and on the main street - very pretty houses. Nice course. Had in-line skating race on the same course. The skaters sometimes didn't move over to the right very far when passing. No big deal. Had some wind that was fairly strong.

One female passed me around mile 17. She was in her 50's - amazing biker.
What would you do differently?:

Bike faster.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

This transition went okay.
Run
  • 51m 55s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Run up to the water and then an out & back on the gravel path around the water. Very pretty run. Quiet. Nice seeing the water. My legs felt good. I used the garmin to look at my pace. My goal was to stay at or below a 9 minute mile pace the entire run. I could see the female that had passed me on the bike ahead of me when we looped around. She was a strong runner too. A 29 year old female passed me after the turn around at about mile 4.5. She was flying!
What would you do differently?:

Run faster!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate a banana, packed up bike and gear in car. Went to find Tammy on the course and run the last mile or so with her.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to work more on speed & pushing myself. Maybe taper before a race?

Event comments:

This was a fun race. It was on my birthday!! I had a great time racing with Tammy. I would participate in this race again.
